CHICAGO – Alex Mangan’s first multi-goal game led the DePaul men’s soccer team to a 2-1 win over Loyola-Chicago on Sunday at Wish Field. The freshman tied the match in the 11th minute before tallying the game-winner midway through the second half.
The scoring started early as each team found the net in the first 11 minutes. Loyola-Chicago (0-2-0) got on the board first with a header off a throw-in. Alex Jones knocked in the throw from Steven Graner on the right sideline at 8:40.
Julian Chill connected with Mangan at 10:38 to knot the match at 1-1. Chill set up the play from the right side and Mangan headed the ball to the back of the net uncontested for DePaul’s first goal of the season.
The remainder of the half played even as each team created opportunities. Jeff DeGroot nearly put DePaul (1-1-0) ahead as he chest-trapped a pass and fired it out of the air just over the crossbar with 15 minutes left in the first half. Three minutes later, Loyola's Michael Ferguson knocked a shot just wide of the right post and a diving Brian Visser from left side of the penalty box. In the final minute before intermission, Ferguson’s header hit the left post and ricocheted out of bounds.
An even second half saw both teams with chances as John Partyka lined up a free kick just inside the Loyola half of the field. His serve into the box found Mangan, who sent it home for the eventual game-winner at 65:02. For Mangan, it was his first career multi-goal match and first two collegiate goals.
Visser came up big in the final minutes as the Ramblers attempted to find the equalizer. With seven minutes left and a scrum for the ball in front of the net, Visser pounced on the free ball and thwarted a Loyola scoring opportunity. The sophomore keeper finished the afternoon with two saves while the Ramblers outshot the Blue Demons, 10-9.
DePaul goes on the road for the next five matches starting at Illinois-Chicago on Wednesday night. The Blue Demons and Flames kickoff at 7 p.m. Next weekend has DePaul in Cincinnati for matches with Xavier and Marshall in the Xavier Tournament.
