CHICAGO - With just three points separating seven teams in the BIG EAST Red Division standing, the DePaul men’s soccer team plays at USF and Villanova this week. The Blue Demons sit in a tie for sixth place with nine points while USF is tied for third with 10 points and the Wildcats sit atop the division with 12 points. A win on Tuesday would move the Blue Demons into a tie for first place as wins are worth three points and ties are for one point.
DePaul is 7-4-0 overall, 3-3-0 in BIG EAST play and ranked sixth in the NSCAA/adidas Great Lakes Region rankings. USF is ranked No. 18 in the NSCAA national top 25 and No. 20 in this week’s Soccer America rankings. The Bulls are 8-2-2 overall and 3-2-1 in league play while Villanova is 4-3-0 in the BIG EAST and 9-4-0 overall.
Finishing the Tough Stretch: The Northwestern match marked the end of a five-game stretch that saw DePaul play three teams ranked in the top eight nationally. The 1-0 win over then-No. 2/2 Connecticut on Sept. 23 started the stretch followed by a 1-0 loss at then-No. 8/14 West Virginia. This week’s NSCAA/adidas poll sees Connecticut at No. 1, Northwestern at No. 9 and West Virginia at No. 20. The Soccer America top 25 has Connecticut at No. 2 followed by the Wildcats at No. 16 and the Mountaineers at No. 21. Tuesday’s game at USF marks the fourth ranked opponent in the last seven matches as the Bulls are ranked in both national polls.
A Season of Firsts: Eleven matches into the 2007 campaign, the DePaul men’s soccer team has set a number of program firsts:
- The 4-0-0 start was the first time the Blue Demons won each of their first four matches.
- The No. 5 slot held for two weeks in the Great Lakes Region NSCAA/adidas poll is the highest in program history.
- The No. 17 ranking in the Sept. 24 Soccer America top 25 is the first national ranking in program history.
- Brian Visser became the first goalkeeper in school history with four consecutive shutouts in a season with four blank sheets to begin the 2007 schedule.
- Visser also holds the DePaul career record with 13 shutouts. He has totaled the 13 shutouts in 42 matches.
- Visser set the season shutout record with his seventh shutout on Oct. 13 against Rutgers. Brett Rosenberger previously held the record with six shutouts in 1994.
Last Defense Standing: Through the early portion of the 2007 schedule, the DePaul men’s soccer team stood as the only program in the nation to not allow a goal. The Blue Demons posted four straight shutouts to start the season over Jacksonville, UW-Green Bay, Xavier and Valparaiso. Providence ended the streak the with a 2-0 decision over the Blue Demons on Sept. 21. Shutouts is the theme of 2007 as each of DePaul’s nine games have been decided by a shutout.
