Cardinals Top Blue Demons

LOUISVILLE, Ky. With two matches remaining and tournament berths up in the air, the DePaul men’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision at Louisville on Wednesday night. The Cardinals scored once in each half and moved ahead of the Blue Demons in the Red Division standings. DePaul now sits in a tie for fourth place with Villanova. The Blue Demons and Wildcats tangle on Saturday at Wish Field.
Louisville (10-5-2, 5-4-1 BIG EAST) converted a corner kick in the ninth minute to take the early advantage. Aaron Clapham started the play from the corner and found the head of Ryan McDonald at 8:52. The Cardinals added an insurance goal less than 10 minutes into the second half when Bryan Kanu’s serve in front of the frame found Clapham for the score at 52:23.
DePaul (6-6-4, 4-4-2 BIG EAST) finished the evening with seven shots, but just one attempt was on goal. Louisville, ranked No. 21 in this week’s NSCAA Coaches’ poll and No. 20 in the Soccer America top 25, totaled 10 attempts with four on goal and the Blue Demons held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Brian Visser finished the game with two saves and Louisville’s Andre Boudreaux was credited with a single stop. Patrick Hopkins and Mark Plotkin took two shots each to lead the Blue Demons.
DePaul concludes the regular season Saturday afternoon at Wish Field. The Blue Demons face Villanova at 1 p.m. as both sides enter the match in fourth place in the Red Division standings. Saturday is also Senior Day with DePaul’s five seniors honored prior to kickoff.
Game Notes: The Blue Demons allowed more than one goal for just the third time this season... Louisville leads the series, 10-7-1.
