CHICAGO The DePaul men’s soccer team created chances, but came up scoreless in a 2-0 loss to West Virginia on Friday. The visiting Mountaineers scored a goal in each half within five minutes of intermission.
DePaul (2-4-2, 1-2-0 BIG EAST) put together chances throughout the game as Patrick Hopkins nearly got DePaul on the board in the 22nd minute. As a scrum ensued in front of the West Virginia net, the ball squirted over to Hopkins in the center of the box. However, his line drive attempt to the upper half of the net had a bit too much on it and the liner cleared the crossbar.
With 11 minutes remaining in the first half, Erich Reichmann lined up a line drive on the right flank, but West Virginia’s Zach Johnson used his entire 6-5 frame and made the one-handed save to keep the Blue Demons scoreless.
Paul Paradise notched the eventual game-winner in the 44th minute when Declan Coll started the action at the top of the 18-yard box. He fed Alex Silva on the left flank who lofted a cross toward DePaul’s near post. Paradise came through with his back to the net and headed the ball to the back post at 43:18 for his second goal of the season.
Following halftime, West Virginia (2-3-3, 1-0-2 BIG EAST) scored on an unassisted goal by Adam Mills. Mills gathered a rebound and found the back net at 49:35 for his first goal of the season.
The Blue Demons finished the game with eight shots while West Virginia total seven attempts. Brian Visser made two saves in the net for DePaul while Johnson finished the afternoon with three stops. The Blue Demons racked up nine corner kicks to four for the Mountaineers.
DePaul concludes the home weekend with a Sunday afternoon game against Pittsburgh. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. at Wish Field and the game can be seen live at www.depaulbluedemons.com.
