HONOLULU, Hawaii -- The No. 18/18 DePaul women's basketball team faces its second test of the season at the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic Nov. 18-20. The Blue Demons, who opened their season by winning DePaul's Maggie Dixon Classic, are scheduled to play San Diego State, Portland and Hawaii during the three-day tournament hosted by Hawaii at Stan Sheriff Center.
DePaul opened its season with wins over St. Mary's and Samford on its home floor. The wins stretched DePaul's McGrath-Phillips Arena winning streak to 21 games which is the second longest in school history. The school's record is 33 games which ran from Dec. 19, 2003-Jan. 28, 2006.
Heading into the tournament on Hawai'i's big island, the Blue Demons are led in scoring by Keisha Hampton and Anna Martin. The pair is each averaging 18.0 points per game while Hampton is averaging 5.0 rebounds and Martin is distributing 4.0 assists per outing. Martin is shooting .682 (15-of-22) from the field including a 4-of-8 effort from 3-point range. Hampton leads the team with three blocks and is 11-of-14 from the free throw line following the first two games of the season.
Following the Maggie Dixon Classic, Hampton was named the tournament's MVP while Martin and Chanise Jenkins were named to the all-tournament team. Jenkins is averaging 7.0 points per game and dished out five assists in DePaul's Championship game against Samford.
The Blue Demons are scheduled to play three games in three days with its first test coming against San Diego State. DePaul last saw the Aztecs in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament in 2009. SDSU narrowly defeated DePaul, 76-70 on its home floor. Friday's game tips at 9 p.m. (CST) and will be the first meeting on a neutral court for the two teams.
San Diego State (1-0) opened its season with an 86-43 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Nov. 14. The Aztecs were paced by Courtney Clements who scored 21 points. The Aztecs combined for 11 blocks and shot .412 from the field for the game.
On Saturday, the Blue Demons will square off with Portland (1-1) for the first time. DePaul's second game of the tournament is set to begin at 4 p.m.
The Pilots are led Natalie Day who averaged 22.0 points and 7.0 rebounds during Portland's two games and earned West Coast Conference Player of the Week honors on Monday.
DePaul closes out the Rainbow Wahine Classic on Sunday with host, Hawaii. The two teams are meeting for the just the second time, while Hawai'i won the series' only other meeting in 1997 on its home court. The Rainbow Wahine (1-0) are led by Kamilah Jackson who tallied 15 points and 15 rebounds in Hawai'i's season opener against Hawai'I Hilo.
The final game of the Rainbow Wahine Classic can be seen throughout the Islands on Time Warner Cable and is scheduled to tip at 9 p.m.
Following DePaul's trip to Hawaii, the Blue Demons break for the Thanksgiving holiday and tangle at Northwestern on Nov. 27. The 2 p.m. matinee can be seen live on the Big Ten Network and has been tabbed Autism Awareness by the Wildcats.
- Noting the Blue Demons: DePaul is 684-393 (.635) all-time... the 2011-12 campaign is the 37th season of women's basketball at DePaul University... since the start of the 2003-04 season (264 games), the Blue Demons have held 64.8 percent of their opponents to less than 70 points (171-of-264)... in that span, DePaul is 146-25 (.854) when holding opponents to less than 70 points... in that same time span, DePaul has scored 70 or more points in 175 games... DePaul is 153-22 (.874) when scoring 70 plus points... in the last six plus seasons (232 games), the Blue Demons are 166-66 (.716)... in the last 68 home games against conference opponents, DePaul has posted 57 victories... over the last ten plus seasons (355 games), DePaul has scored at least 80 points in 118 games... the Blue Demons hold a 113-5 (.958) record in those games... in the same span, DePaul is 48-1, including 46 straight wins, when scoring at least 90 points.
- Regular Season Tournament History: DePaul is 78-27 (.743) all-time in regular season tournaments dating back to 1980-81 season... the Blue Demons have played in 48 regular-season tournaments including the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic... DePaul has won 25 regular season tournaments and finished in second place nine times... Earlier this season, DePaul won the Maggie Dixon Classic with wins over St. Mary's and Samford.
- Home Cookin': Through 11 plus seasons, McGrath-Phillips Arena - formerly known as the DePaul Athletic Center - has proven itself as one of the toughest venues in the nation. The Blue Demons have posted a 137-21 (.867) record in the arena's 158 games.
DePaul's .866 winning percentage entering the 2011-12 season ranked seventh among all active arenas. There have been three perfect seasons at McGrath-Phillips Arena-- DePaul went 13-0 in 2002-03, 14-0 in 2004-05 and 17-0 in 2010-11.
In its 37th season of women's basketball at DePaul University, the Blue Demons have an all-time home court record of 401-105 (.792). Over 26 seasons at Alumni Hall, the women's basketball program won over 75 percent of its games with a 242-80 all-time record. At the Allstate Arena, the women's program has posted an all-time record of 22-4.
There have been 16 streaks of at least 10 straight home victories. The longest streak was a 33-game run that started on Dec. 19, 2003 with a 99-63 win over Alabama State and ended on Jan. 28, 2006 with an 84-75 defeat to #5/4 Connecticut.
DePaul finished the 2010-11 season on a 19-game streak which dated back to a 68-57 win over Pittsburgh on Feb. 23, 2010. DePaul extended its winning streak during the Maggie Dixon Classic to 21 games. During DePaul's current 21-game winning streak the Blue Demons have an average margin of victory of 20.0 points per game.
Over the last nine years at McGrath-Phillips Arena, the team is 116-14 (.892) at home with five losses to teams ranked in the top five. DePaul lost in overtime to #2/2 Tennessee on Dec. 17, 2003, before the Connecticut loss in Jan. 2006. Tennessee, ranked third in both polls, served DePaul its fifth defeat before the 77-76 loss to #1/1 Connecticut on Mar. 1, 2008.
The Blue Demons have also posted 108 victories in the last 111 games over unranked opponents. West Virginia ended DePaul's 58-game streak over unranked opponents with a 74-63 decision on Jan. 9, 2007 before Pittsburgh and Louisville handed the Blue Demons defeats in 2007-08. During the 58-game streak, there were 54 victories at McGrath-Phillips Arena and four wins at the Allstate Arena.
- It Could Happen: Coach Doug Bruno could win his 529th career coaching victory and 489th at the collegiate level... Keisha Hampton could start her 104th consecutive game... could win its 65th consecutive game over an unranked non-conference opponent on its home court... with one 3-pointer it would run DePaul's streak to 61 consecutive games with a 3-pointer.
- BIG EAST Preseason Selections: DePaul was picked to finish sixth in the annual BIG EAST Conference Coaches' Preseason Poll. Notre Dame was at the top of the poll followed by Connecticut. Louisville was chosen third, followed by Rutgers and Georgetown in the fourth and fifth spots. DePaul was selected to finish sixth, St. John's seventh and Syracuse eighth. West Virginia was picked ninth and USF rounded out the top 10. The Bulls were followed by Marquette, Pittsburgh, Villanova, Providence, Cincinnati and Seton Hall.
- Streaking: Dating back to last season and in some cases, the last couple of seasons, the Blue Demons have put together various streaks. Listed below are some current active streaks:
- 65-straight victories over unranked non-conference opponents at home
- 61-games with at least one 3-pointer
- 21-game winning streak at McGrath-Phillips Arena --- dates back to Feb. 23, 2010
- Nine-consecutive wins over programs from the State of Illinois
- Nine-consecutive NCAA Championship appearances
- Taking Advantage from Beyond the Arc: Since the start of the 2005-06 season (201 games), the club has knocked down 1,367 (6.8 per game) trifectas compared to just 989 (4.9 per game) for the opposition... DePaul has knocked down at least one 3-pointer in its last 61 games and has tallied a three-pointer in 467 of the last 470 games... DePaul has made 200 or more 3-pointers in 11 of its last 12 seasons... the 2009-10 team tallied 163 to end DePaul's streak at 10 seasons... in 2010-11 DePaul set a school record with 255 3-pointers.
- 16, 3-pointers: DePaul tied a school record with 16, 3-pointers against St. Mary's in its season opener... DePaul also made 16 3-pointers at Seton Hall on Mar. 3, 2008... 16 3-pointers is a new McGrath-Phillips Arena record, the previous best was 15 against Northwestern State on Nov. 22, 2003.
- Hooping it up with Hampton: DePaul returns honorable mention Associated Press and State Farm/WBCA All-American Keisha Hampton. Hampton led the Blue Demons in scoring last season with 16.0 points per outing and knocked in 14.9 during conference place. A three-time All-BIG EAST selection, Hampton was a unanimous first-team selection as a senior. She also became the first Blue Demon to earn BIG EAST Championship All-Tournament team honors after averaging 20.5 points in DePaul's two games in Hartford.
- World University Games: Hampton returned from the World University Games a gold medalist after helping the USA Women's team go 6-0 in Shenzhen, China. Hampton played in all eight games averaging 4.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per contest. Hampton became the first women's basketball player in DePaul history to make a USA Basketball roster.
- Consecutive Starts: Keisha Hampton is one of three Division I players to have started 100 or more consecutive games. Tennessee's Shekinna Stricklen has started 104 straight and Hampton follows with 104. Miami senior Shenise Johnson is third on the list and has started 100 straight games.
- Preseason honors: Keisha Hampton's senior season has been filled with a handful of preseason honors. The senior, who was an honorable mention Associated Press and State Farm/WBCA All-American last year, has been tabbed a unanimous preseason All-BIG EAST Conference selection and was named to the preseason Wooden and Wade Watch Lists.
- 26 and Counting: Coach Doug Bruno begins his 26th season at the helm of the Blue Demon women's program. Bruno has tallied 489 collegiate wins at DePaul and has 529 in his 27 seasons of coaching women's collegiate and professional basketball.
- On Track for 1,000: Anna Martin is on track to become DePaul's 27th 1,000 point scorer. The junior has 770 career points, while she has averaged 10.7 points per contest since arriving in Lincoln Park in 2009.
- Climbing in the record book: Keisha Hampton became DePaul's 24th 1,000 point scorer in 2010-11..this season, Hampton has 36 points for 1,411 points in her career... needs 12 points to tie Latasha Byears (1994-96) for 13th all-time...Diana Vines (1985-89) holds DePaul's school record with 2,504 career points.
- Get that out of here: Katherine Harry has 98 career blocks which ranks sixth on DePaul's All-Time list... needs 19 blocks to tie Dianna Vines for fifth... during her career, Harry has averaged 1.29 blocks per game and has a career-best five blocks against Valparaiso on Nov. 12, 2010... tallied three or more blocks in 12 career games.
- New Faces: DePaul welcomes Chanise Jenkins, Alexa Gallagher, Brittany Hrynko, Megan Rogowski, Karima Gabriel while sophomore transfer Kelsey Reynolds is available for action after sitting out last season due to the NCAA transfer guidelines.
- Against the State: DePaul has seen recent success against in-state opponents... over the last 69 games against Chicago State, Illinois, Illinois-Chicago, Illinois State, Loyola-Chicago, Northern Illinois, Northwestern, Southern Illinois and Southern Illinois Edwardsville, the Blue Demons have posted 65 victories... DePaul's 36-game winning streak against programs from the state of Illinois came to an end when Northwestern defeated the Blue Demons 59-55 in Evanston on Nov. 24, 2009... prior to the loss at Northwestern, the last loss to a state program was on Dec. 4, 2002, when Illinois defeated the Blue Demons in Champaign by a 71-67 score... during the 61-game stretch, two losses were at Illinois with the last home loss to an in-state program was on Nov. 20, 1998, against Northwestern... the Wildcats defeated the Blue Demons at Alumni Hall by a score of 62-61 and then most recently at Welsh-Ryan Arena in 2009... DePaul plays at Northwestern and Illinois State, and hosts, Loyola-Chicago, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, Southern Illinois, Northern Illinois... DePaul has won its last nine against schools from the state of Illinois.
- Ranked Teams at McGrath-Phillips Arena: DePaul is 11-12 (.478) all-time against Top 25 opponents at McGrath Arena since the 2000-01 season... in games that DePaul has won over a ranked opponent, the Blue Demons average margin of victory was 13.5 points... DePaul has lost just 21 games since McGrath-Phillips Arena opened in 2000-01, of those 21 losses, 12 have come to ranked teams... five of those 12 losses were decided by three or less points... DePaul's game with Tennessee in 2003 went to overtime with the Blue Demons falling 96-89... narrowly fell to No. 1/1 Connecticut 81-80 during the 2007-08 season.
- Season-Opening Notes: The Blue Demons are 29-9 all-time season openers and are 22-4 in season openers on their home floor... head coach Doug Bruno is 20-6 in the season's first game at DePaul... the Blue Demons have won their last five season openers... DePaul has won 10 of its last 11 season openers dating back to the 2001-02 season.
