HONOLULU - Anna Martin led all scorers with 29 points and helped the No. 18/18 DePaul women's basketball team to an impressive 99-64 win over Portland on Saturday at Hawai'i's Stan Sheriff Center.
Martin's season-high 29 points came on 11-of-15 from the field including five 3-pointers. The junior from Kentucky paced six Blue Demons in double-figures. Kelsey Reynolds came off the bench to score 15 and Keisha Hampton added 14. Brittany Hrynko and Megan Rogowski each scored 13 and Katherine Harry finished with 10 points.
Harry was one rebound from a double-double as the junior paced the floor with nine rebounds. Hampton and Rogowski each grabbed eight rebounds and Martin had seven.
DePaul (3-1) came out focused and determined to rebound from its opening round loss to San Diego State on Friday. The Blue Demons shot .493 (36-of-73) from the field and tallied 15 3-pointers against Portland (2-2).
DePaul's 15 triples is its second most of the season -- the Blue Demons hit 16 against St. Mary's to open their 2011-12 campaign. 15 3-pointers is the second most in school history and has been accomplished three times.
With the Blue Demons shooting lights out, DePaul controlled the boards and outrebounded the Pilots 48-29 and held a 26-8 advantage on second-chance points.
As the game got underway, there were two early ties in the first half - one at two and another at seven all before DePaul's offense kicked it into high gear which was jumped started by Reynolds and Rogowski. The newcomer pair came in off the bench and provided DePaul with an instant spark both on the offensive and defensive ends.
Tied at seven, Martin hit a pair of free throws before Reynolds and Rogowski combined to score DePaul's next 13 points - nine came from 3-pointers. The scoring outburst by Reynolds and Rogowski gave the Blue Demons a 22-12 advantage with 12:35 to play in the half.
While it was the newcomers who shined at the beginning, Martin and Harry - the juniors, combined to score DePaul's last 14 points in the final 6:40 of the half. Martin led all scorers with 13 first half points.
The Blue Demons went to the locker room up 47-24.
Martin continued to make her presence felt in the second half as the junior scored 13 of DePaul's first 18 points which stretched the Blue Demon lead to 65-37 with 14:13 to play. Martin's scoring outburst included three 3-pointers, and a pair of jumpers.
With 13:10 remaining in the contest, Rogowski gave the Blue Demons their first 30-point lead (68-37) when Deanna Ortiz found Rogowski in the corner for a 3-pointer.
The Blue Demons took their largest lead of the game, 95-53 on Harry's putback in the paint with 5:26 to play.
Natalie Day led Portland with 18 points and grabbed four rebounds.
The Blue Demons close out the Rainbow Wahine Classic on Sunday when they face host Hawai'i at 9 p.m. (CST). The final game of the tournament can be seen on the internet through Oceanic Time Warner Pay-Per-View.
