Reno, NEV. - Kirsten Verdun put on an all-around dominant performance Saturday at the Wolf Pack Classic.
The freshman left-hander combined with Bree Brown to throw a no-hitter in leading DePaul to an 8-0 triumph over Boston College.
In the batter's box, Verdun was 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored.
Verdun threw five hitless innings with two strikeouts and one walk. In the final two innings, Brown had her best stint of the season. The 2010 BIG EAST Conference Rookie of the Year struck out four of the six batters she faced.
The sophomore right-hander ended the game by striking out Brittany Wilkins and Gemma Ypparila.
It was the first combined no-hitter for Verdun and Brown. As a freshman, Brown recorded a no-hitter against Rutgers on April 17, 2010.
The Blue Demons' 12-hit attack also featured Alex Morocco (4-for-5, one run), Lynsey Ciezki (2-for-3, one RBI, one run), Samantha Dodd (2-for-3, one RBI, one run) and Katelyn Braget (1-for-1, two runs, one RBI).
DePaul (10-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning after a Braget walk and a Morocco single. Verdun's grounder to shortstop brought in Braget, and a subsequent error allowed Morocco to score.
An inning later, the Blue Demons put up another deuce on the scoreboard.
This time, Dodd led off with an infield single. With two out, Braget singled and was advancing to second when an error on the Eagles catcher allowed her to come all the way around behind Dodd.
DePaul tacked on another insurance run in the fifth. A Verdun single, an Allie Braden walk and Brittney Yniguez's sacrifice bunt set up Dodd for her sacrifice fly-RBI to center field.
Verdun's blast followed a Lynsey Ciezki single in the sixth.
Sean Plese led off the seventh with a base hit. Morocco came through with a two-out single and Ciezki followed with an RBI single, scoring Plese.
That gave the Blue Demons what coach Eugene Lenti is always emphasizing---scoring multiple times. They put up runs in five consecutive innings.
DePaul closed out the Classic with a 2:45 p.m. game against host Nevada.
