VILLANOVA, Pa. - These Blue Demons were two-out terrors on Saturday.
DePaul scored a total of six runs after two outs in the first and second inning en route to a 10-3 victory over Villanova in the opener of a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader.
Led by three hits apiece from Lindsey Dean, Samantha Dodd and Allie Braden, DePaul pounded out a season-high 16 hits.
After blowing it open early, DePaul (21-11, 6-1 in the BIG EAST) added two runs in the third inning and single runs in the fifth and sixth.
With two out in the first, winning pitcher Kirsten Verdun (13-3) walked and Katelyn Braget singled to right field. Dean followed with an RBI single to left that scored Verdun and Dodd's infield single brought home Braget.
Villanova (15-19-1, 2-5) tied it in the bottom of the first on Kristi Burlin's two-run home run.
Back came the Blue Demons.
With two out, Braden singled to center field and Alex Morocco singled to right-center. Braden took third on the throw and then Morocco stole second.
Sean Plese came through with a two-run single and then came trotting home when Verdun blasted her eighth home run of the season.
In the third inning, a Dean single and a Dodd double set up Lynsey Ciezki for a sacrifice fly RBI. Yniguez made it 8-2 with an RBI groundout.
The Wildcats got one back in the bottom of the third, but three-straight hits from Dodd, Ciezki and Braden followed by Morocco's groundout RBI got that run back in the fifth.
An inning later, Dodd's groundout brought home Braget.
Verdun pitched four innings and gave up three runs on seven hits. The freshman lefty struck out three and walked none. Dean retired nine consecutive Wildcats in relief with one strikeout.
The Blue Demons had a rematch with Villanova in game two of the doubleheader.
