CHICAGO - DePaul men's soccer headed to New York on Friday in search of its second victory in BIG EAST Conference play when it takes on St. John's at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The Blue Demons opened the league season with a resounding 3-1 triumph over Seton Hall on Sept. 27 at Wish Field. Leading scorer Simon Megally (four goals) connected on the first goal and freshman Alessandro Thomas came through with the first two goals of his collegiate career.
But since then, DePaul (4-7-3, 1-3-1 in the BIG EAST) has been unable to find the back of the net.
Goalkeeper Mack Robinson and the defense played well in double-overtime, scoreless ties with Loyola Chicago and Butler. Robinson is No. 19 in the country in saves and No. 42 in saves per game. The junior keeper is No. 2 in the BIG EAST in both categories.
Freshman Hans Wustling has made an immediate impact on coach Craig Blazer's side. His four assists are No. 5 in the BIG EAST, and he is seventh in assists per game.
St. John's comes into the match with the same 4-7-3 record as DePaul, 1-4-0 in the BIG EAST. The Red Storm has been outscored 19-14, and opponents hold an 85-54 advantage in shots on goal. Coach Dave Masur's side is looking to snap a three-game losing streak.
Center back Tim Parker is St. John's top player. He is a preseason All-American defender and was selected for the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List as one of the top 30 players in the nation.
Goalkeeper Jordan Stagmiller has a 0.94 goals-against average and two shutouts over the last nine games.
Offensively, Marco Bordon has three goals and one assist to lead the Red Storm attack while Mohamed Awad, Gabriel Camara and Luis Esteves each have a pair of goals.
St. John's is 4-2-1 at Belson Stadium this season.
DePaul needs to get off to a fast start and score that first goal on Saturday night. St. John's is 46-1-2 when scoring first since 2010.
