
January Leads DePaul in Overtime Win at St. John's

QUEENS, N.Y. - Jessica January scored five of her 13 points in overtime to lead the DePaul women's basketball team to an 84-75 overtime win over St. John's on Friday at Carnesecca Arena.
With the win, DePaul has won four straight, stays a top the BIG EAST Conference standings and improves to 13-5 on the season. St. John's falls to 13-4 and is 4-2 in league games.
Brittany Hrynko led five DePaul players in double-figures with 25 points. Brooke Schulte and Megan Podkowa both came off the bench and added 15 points while Chanise Jenkins and January each scored 13.
Centrese McGee, who made her fifth start this year, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out four assists. Podkowa also finished with eight rebounds and was credited with three of DePaul's four blocks.
Aliyya Handford paced the Red Storm with 25 points and Danaejah Grant scored 23. Amber Thompson paced the floor with 14 rebounds.
St, John's led by four - 72-68 - with a minute to play in regulation and Hrynko nailed her fourth 3-pointer in front of the DePaul bench to pull the Blue Demons within one and with 47 seconds on the clock.
Grant made one of two free throws which left the door open for the Blue Demons. Schulte, who was fouled on Grant's miss, made a pair of free throws to knot the game at 73.
St. John's called a timeout with 14 seconds left and drew up a play, but DePaul locked down on defense and the only shot the Red Storm could get was an off balance 3-pointer from the top of the key as time expired.
January started the overtime period by hitting a 3-pointer and the Blue Demons led the rest of the way.
St. John's led by as many as seven points in the first half (29-22), but the Blue Demons kept fighting and forced the Red Storm into eight turnovers.
Down seven with less than five minutes to play in the half, five different Blue Demons - McGee, Schulte, Podkowa and Jenkins all scored to pull the DePaul within one, 36-35 with 40 seconds to play.
A Red Storm turnover resulted in a Hrynko layup and DePaul went to the locker room up 37-36. Hrynko led the Blue Demons with 14 first half points, three assists, a steal and a block.
DePaul plays at Seton Hall on Sunday. Tip with the Pirates is scheduled for 2 p.m. (ET) and the game can be heard on DePaul's BlueTube with Dave Bernhard calling the action.
