CHICAGO - DePaul's recent run of success culminated Monday in the men's soccer program being honored with a weekly award from the BIG EAST Conference.
Senior Mack Robinson was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week after his season-high 11 saves enabled the Blue Demons to keep the zero in last Saturday's double-overtime, scoreless draw at Providence.
DePaul (3-11-1, 2-3-1 in BIG EAST) has only lost once in its last four games to remain in the hunt for a berth in the BIG EAST Championship tournament.
Against a potent attacking Friars team that features Mac Steeves, the league's second-leading goal scorer, Robinson and the Blue Demon back line withstood a 24-shot assault with 11 attempts right on target.
Providence also had a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks. Steeves took 12 shots himself with five on goal, but couldn't find a way around or through Robinson.
"This is fantastic," Robinson said about his first BIG EAST award. "I'm glad to get the recognition for my performance, but it wasn't just me. Our defense did a great job of staying strong and executing the game plan. This award is for the entire team and not just me.
"Those saves were tough. Mac Steeves won the Offensive Player of the 2014 College Cup award, but I was ready. Our defense did whatever it took to keep the zero against a very good attacking team.
"Now, we've got to keep it up against Butler---another very good attacking team."
Since a 2-1 loss to Northwestern on an own goal on Oct. 7, coach Craig Blazer's side has topped Villanova 3-2 on a Simon Megally penalty kick in the 85th minute and beat Seton Hall 3-2 on the road in double-overtime thanks to John Freitag's golden goal in the 101st minute.
The lone loss was 1-0 to No. 9/9 Georgetown when Robinson & Co. kept the zero for 74 minutes in the face of the Hoyas' 23-shot attack. That was followed by the tie at Providence.
The Blue Demons look to keep their momentum going at a 6 p.m. BIG EAST road match Wednesday at Butler which comes in with an 8-3-3 record, 4-2-0 in conference.
