Softball Shutout in Loss to Hawaii

HONOLULU - The DePaul softball team was unable to produce the offense from the previous two games and fell 8-0 in five innings to Hawaii in the final round robin game of the Hawaii Paradise Classic on Friday evening.
After putting up 11 runs in the first two games, the Blue Demons (0-3) were only able to collect two hits in the shortened game by virtue of the run rule.
The Rainbow Wahine (2-0) started fast, scoring two runs by a fielder's choice and a single up the middle to take a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
After a stagnant second inning, Ali Lenti provided a spark for DePaul as she laced a single down the left field line. Hawaii was able to work out of the inning, keeping Lenti at first.
Miscues proved costly for the road team as Hawaii scored five runs behind only one hit in the inning. Two wild pitches, a fielding error and hit-by-pitch by the Blue Demons all played a part in the Rainbow Wahine's biggest offensive inning.
Down 7-0 and heading into the fourth, Dylan Christensen smacked a double to deep left field to give the Blue Demons their first runner in scoring position of the game. Hawaii thwarted the pressure by getting a groundout and two flyouts to end the inning.
The hosts then put together two hits in the bottom of the fifth to make the game final at 8-0.
Mary Connolly (0-2) started the game in the circle, but was relieved by Maxine Rodriguez in the fourth. Between the two, they held Hawaii to just five hits.
Hawaii pitcher Kanani Aina Cabrales (1-0) earned her first career win for the Rainbow Wahine behind a five-inning, two-hit shutout. Cabrales totaled only 51 pitches, with 36 of them in the zone.
DePaul is slated to take on either Hawaii or Oklahoma tomorrow at 4 p.m. CT. The winner of the afternoon game will play again at 8 p.m. with the loser to play right away at 6 p.m.
Notes: This was the 11th meeting all-time between the two programs… Hawaii is currently riding a four-game winning streak in the series… DePaul is on a three-game losing streak for only the third time since 2010… the Blue Demons are 1-3 in games the follow such a streak in that span… DePaul was held without a run for only the sixth time in the last 100 games played.
