SAN MARCOS, Texas- The DePaul softball team opened its season with a 6-5 victory over Abilene Christian on Friday at the Texas State Softball Stadium.
Abilene Christian (0-1) jumped to an early lead, scoring two runs in the second inning and one in the third.
Down 3-0, DePaul (1-0) responded with a big four-run fourth inning. Haydn Christensen's RBI single scored Dylan Christensen from third base, causing the Wildcats to sub Allison Turner for Hannah Null in the circle. Turner walked Megan Leyva with bases loaded for Kali Gardner to run in for a 2-3 score. With Maize up to bat, the senior connected with the pitch, clocking in Angela Scalzitti and Haydn Christensen for DePaul to pull ahead 4-3.
The Wildcats responded with two runs in the fifth, but DePaul tied it up at five after Gardner's RBI to center field allowed Brianna Viles to cross home plate.
Maize scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh off an error by Abilene Christian's first baseman. Maize finished the game with four at bats, a run, two hits and two RBI.
Maize took over pitching duties for Leyva in the final two innings. She faced eight batters and struck out three to secure her first win of the season in the circle.
Turner fell 0-1 on the year. She faced 13 batters, allowing two runs after taking over for Null.
The Blue Demons return to the diamond this afternoon to take on Northwestern State at 12:30 p.m.
