Fifth-Inning Surge Puts Bobcats Past DePaul

SAN MARCOS, Texas - DePaul and Texas State combined for four home runs in the Blue Demons' 4-3 loss to the Bobcats on Saturday at the TSU Softball Stadium. The loss drops DePaul to 1-2 on the year, while Texas State improves to 3-0.
Morgan Maize, who got the start in the circle for the Blue Demons, helped her own cause by leading off the game with a home run to straight-away center. The senior's first home run of the year put DePaul up early.
Texas State, evened the score with a home run of its one. Kimberlin Naivar sent her ball over the fence in the third.
Like a see-saw, DePaul regained the lead in the fourth when Nicole Phil recorded her first home run - a solo shot to center.
The Blue Demons added an insurance run in the fifth when Dylan Christensen doubled down the left field line which scored Mazie who has reached on a two-out error.
Up 3-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Ariel Ortiz launched her first home run of the year - a three-run shot over the left field fence which would prove to be the difference maker in the game.
Maize throw a complete-game. She gave up five hits while striking out eight and walking five. The senior pitcher falls to 1-2 on the year.
Paige Williams got the win for Texas State. She threw 5.1 innings allowing six hits and recorded just one strike out. Randi Rupp got the save with 1.2 innings work. She face just six batters.
DePaul is back in action against Oklahoma State at 3 p.m. today.
