Softball Defeats Utah State 8-6

LAS VEGAS - The DePaul softball team clinched its first win of the Rebel Classic at Eller Media Stadium Friday afternoon with a 8-6 victory over Utah State.
DePaul's (4-13) first win of the classic marked the second time this season the Blue Demons have scored a team-high eight runs in a game.
It was all Blue Demons early as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning.
DePaul's first three batters, Micah Fitzgerald, Angela Scalzitti and Dylan Christensen, all reached on singles. The trio scored on Morgan Maize's base-clearing grand slam. Maize's homer marked her third of the season. Kali Gardner and Naomi Tellez scored the final two runs of the inning off a Utah State error.
Utah State (6-9) got on board with three runs in the in the top of fifth.
DePaul responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Cherelle Chambers pinch ran for Dylan Christensen and advanced to second when Maize was walked. Chambers would score on a Nicole Pihl single and give the Blue Demon a 7-3 lead heading into the sixth.
In the top of the sixth, Utah State nailed a two-run home run and pulled within two (7-5).
DePaul added to its lead in the sixth. Leadoff batter Haydn Christensen doubled to center and advanced to third on Tellez's single. Utah State ended DePaul's scoring threat with a double-play, but not before Haydn Christensen crossed the plate for the Blue Demons' eighth run of the game.
Utah State did not back down and added another run. This one on the Aggies' third home run of the game.
Maize improved to 4-8 and threw a complete game. The senior struck out five, allowed 11 hits and six runs, all of which earned.
The Aggies' April Brown (3-3) recorded the loss and threw three innings. Brown allowed five hits and six runs, four of them earned. Alleyah Armendariz was in the circle for the final three innings and allowed five hits and two runs.
DePaul prepares for another game this afternoon against Valparaiso at 1:15 CT.
