DePaul Downs Utah State 8-3

LAS VEGAS - The DePaul softball team opened its final day at the Rebel Classic with an 8-3 victory over Utah State Saturday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium.
DePaul's (5-14) victory over Utah State (7-10) marks its second in a row over the Aggies and the third time this season the Blue Demons have scored a team-high eight runs in a single game. Yesterday DePaul bested Utah State 8-6.
DePaul led the entire game, beginning with two runs in the top of the second courtesy of a two-run home run from Naomi Tellez. With Morgan Maize on base, Tellez connected on the pitch to blast the first of her two homers in the game.
Utah State scored one run in the bottom of the second.
The Blue Demons put together another offensive surge in the top of the third. With Gena Lenti and Micah Fitzgerald on base, Dylan Christensen plated Lenti with a sacrifice fly to center. Maize stepped up to plate next and singled, which advanced Fitzgerald to third. Maize then stole second. Kali Gardner stepped up next and her RBI single scored both Fitzgerald and Maize.
DePaul added two more runs in the fourth. With Leyva and Tellez on base, Fitzgerald connected for an RBI triple to right center which put the Blue Demons up 7-1.
Tellez recorded DePaul's final run of the game in the top of the sixth with a solo homer to right.
Utah State plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but that was as close as the Aggies would get.
Megan Leyva (1-6) collected her first win of the season in the circle while setting a new season and career-high with seven strikeouts. The sophomore pitched five and two-thirds innings, allowing 11 hits and three runs. Maize was in the circle for one and a third inning. She struck out two and allowing no hits.
Katie Schroeder (3-1) suffered the loss for Utah State. She threw for five and two-thirds innings, allowing 11 hits and eight runs. Noelle Johnson finished the game for the Aggies, allowing one hit.
DePaul prepares for its final game at the Rebel Classic this afternoon at 1:15 CT against Santa Clara.
