FULLERTON, Calif. - The DePaul softball team fell 3-1 to Grand Canyon University in its first game of the Easton Tournament in Fullerton, California at Anderson Family Field on Friday.
DePaul (6-15) collected the first run in the bottom of the first, but it would be the only time the Blue Demons got on board.
Morgan Maize, who threw a complete game against the Lopes, showed off her offensive strength in the first inning. With Micah Fitzgerald on third, Maize hit a RBI single for the game's first run.
It wasn't until the top of the fifth when Grand Canyon (21-9) pulled ahead of DePaul.
The Lopes scored a pair of runs in the fifth and another in the sixth for the final 3-1 mark.
DePaul threatened in the bottom of the sixth as Kali Gardner and Maize were on second and third. With two outs, Megan Leyva stepped in to pinch hit for Haydn Christensen, but the sophomore grounded out to end the Blue Demons scoring threat.
Maize is now 5-9 on the season. She allowed 10 hits and struck out eight. Maize's eight strike outs match her season and career high. The last time Maize struck out eight was Feb. 13 against Texas State.
Kailey Regester (7-2) got the win for the Lopes. Regester was in the circle for five innings. She allowed one run and struck out three. Taylor Nowlin pitched the final two innings for GCU and struck out one.
The Blue Demons are back at Anderson Family Field this evening to take on No. 13 Oklahoma at 6 p.m. CT.
