New Mexico Defeats Softball in 10 Innings

FULLERTON, Calif. - Extra innings wasn't enough for DePaul softball, as the Blue Demons fell 8-6 Saturday evening to New Mexico in 10. The loss marks DePaul's second of the day of the Easton Tournament at Anderson Family Field in Fullerton, California.
It was a scoreless first three innings until DePaul (6-18) got on board first with two runs in the top of the fourth. With pinch runner Marsha' Pendilton on third and Morgan Maize on second, Pendilton scored courtesy of a RBI single from Naomi Tellez. Maize followed with a run off another RBI single from Alysia Rodriguez to put DePaul up 2-0.
New Mexico (15-10) tied the game by scoring runs in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings, sending the game to extra innings.
DePaul battled ahead with two runs in the top of the eighth. Maize was placed on second to start the inning and advanced to third off a Haydn Christensen bunt. Tellez scored in Maize and advanced Haydn Christensen to second with her second RBI single of the game.
Megan Leyva stepped up next and advanced Haydn Christensen and Tellez on a ground out. Haydn Christensen scored DePaul's final run of the inning before Gena Lenti got out after being caught in a pickle between first and second.
New Mexico went on score two runs in the bottom of the eighth, tying the game again at 4-4.
DePaul scored another run in the top of the ninth. Gena Lenti was placed on second to start the inning and advanced to third after Micah Fitzgerald grounded out to second. Lenti scored after Dylan Christensen doubled down the infield line, putting the Blue Demons back up 5-4.
The Lobos responded with a run in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game into its final inning.
The Blue Demons notched their final run in the top of the 10th. Maize scored her third run off another RBI single from Tellez.
New Mexico ended the game with a three-run home run in the bottom of the tenth for the final 8-6 score.
Maize (5-9) threw a complete game for DePaul. She allowed nine hits, eight runs and struck out seven.
The Lobos utilized three in the circle. Krissy Fortner (2-1) got the win for New Mexico. Fortner closed out the game, facing two batters. Colette Robert was in the circle for six innings. Robert allowed eight hits, four runs and struck out one. Lauren Soles pitched for 3.1 innings, allowing two hits, runs and strike outs.
DePaul returns to Anderson Family Field tomorrow for its final game of the Easton Tournament. The Blue Demons take on Nebraska at 2:30 p.m. CT.
