CHICAGO- A run in the first, followed by six in the second and third innings catapulted DePaul softball to a 13-0 victory in five innings in the back half of Saturday's doubleheader with Creighton at Cacciatore Stadium.
DePaul's (26-21, 11-7 BIG EAST) Jessica Cothern went 3-for-3 at the plate, adding two runs and three RBI to her resume. Micah Fitzgerald and Megan Leyva added two hits. Fitzgerald, Dylan Christensen and Haydn Christensen also tacked on two runs each.
Missy Zoch earned the win in the circle for DePaul. The freshman delivered five shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out eight.
Michal Hylton suffered the loss for the Blue Jays (18-31, 8-12 BIG EAST).
DePaul jumped ahead in the first on Cothern's fourth home run of the year, a pull shot over the left field fence.
In the second, Megan Leyva unloaded on a line drive home run over the left field fence, marking her seventh of the season. Later on with bases loaded and only one out, Fitzgerald singled to center, scoring two and requiring a Creighton pitching change.
With the bases still loaded in the second, Cothern singled to right field off of new pitcher Bryana Clark. All three base runners came around on a throwing error by the Bluejays right fielder, giving the Blue Demons a 7-0 advantage.
DePaul kept its foot on the gas pedal in the bottom of the third. Batting with one out and Brianna Viles on first, Sabrina Kuchta on second and Haydn Christensen on third, Fitzgerald found the left center gap on a two RBI double to put DePaul up with a 9-0 advantage. A wild pitch scored Viles for the Blue Demon's 10th run. After Dylan Christensen was walked, Cothern doubled to plate Fitzgerald home. Nicole Pihl followed Cothern with a two RBI triple for the final 13-0 finish.
Ashley Cantu recorded the lone hit for the Bluejays in the top of the third.
The Blue Demons' two wins today earned them a spot in the BIG EAST Softball Tournament next weekend out at The Ballpark in Rosemont.
DePaul and Creighton are back for one final game on Sunday, May 7 at 11 a.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
Sunday marks Senior Day for DePaul's four seniors, Dylan Christensen, Micah Fitzgerald, Ana Greik and Nicole Pihl.
