DePaul will compete against No. 19 Marquette for the second time this season in their lone match of the weekend.
CHICAGO - DePaul will head to Milwaukee to compete in their lone match of the weekend against No. 19 Marquette. This will mark the second meeting of the season between the Blue Demons (5-15, 3-6 BIG EAST) and Golden Eagles (17-2, 8-1 BIG EAST). Play will take place at the McGuire Center and will begin at 7:00 p.m.Â
"There's nothing better than having the opportunity to open the second half of BIG EAST play getting to compete against our regional rival in Marquette who currently sits second overall," said head coach Marie Zidek. "We played them very competitively for one set last time up, and we feel like we are in a good spot to string together a more consistent performance.
"They are definitely the standards when it comes to offensive power and kill count in our conference and it will take a very solid defensive effort and aggressive transition in order to put ourselves in a successful position.
"We will also have to absorb their first swings on the ball and work hard to win the non-stated play. They have the ability to wear you down if you can't absorb the first swing and point score evenly, and this has been extra motivation for our squad this week in practice as legs are getting heavy and school distractions are setting in. That said, practices have been sharp and we look forward to the matchup on Friday night."
Last Time Versus Marquette
Earlier in October, DPU dropped to Marquette in three sets 3-0 (14-25, 25-27, 14-25). DePaul kept the Golden Eagles on their toes in a fierce second stanza where Marquette reached set point, forcing a DPU timeout. The Blue Demons would capitalize on the next two plays out of the stoppage on kills from Emma Price and Claire Anderson to lift DPU ahead 25-24, however, MU would go on to take the set as well as the match.Â
Scouting the Golden Eagles
Marquette was picked to finish first in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll and currently sits just shy of that ranking. The Golden Eagles, who have suffered just one conference loss this season, are currently second in the BIG EAST standings, just behind Creighton who is perfect in conference play.Â
Last weekend, Marquette blanked St. John's on the road 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-22) to tally their seventh consecutive sweep. After an impressive performance over the weekend, Marquette sophomore Martha Konovodoff was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. Konovodoff averaged 5.00 digs per set in three matches over the weekend and played a key role in holding opponents to just a .179 hitting percentage.
Additionally, senior Anna Haak earned a spot on the conference honor roll after achieving a double-double over the weekend averaged 4.22 digs per set and 4.00 kills.Â
