The DePaul men's soccer team finished the 2017 season on a high note as the Blue Demons overpowered BIG EAST foe and state-line rival Marquette in a 3-1 victory. Marquette took an early 1-0 in the eighth minute, but DePaul responded with three unanswered goals to pull out the win. DePaul responded with the equalizer in 10th minute as freshman Istvan Wilhelms netted his fourth goal of the season off a cross from senior Philipp Konigstein. Knotted at 1-1 at the break, the Blue Demons took a 2-1 lead four minutes into the second half when Bryan Simons connected for his first career goal. Sophomore Zach El-Shafei fired a shot just outside the box that was blocked by the Golden Eagle keeper but landed at the feet of Simons who tapped in the bouncer from just inside the 18. The Blue Demons played the final 23 minutes of the contest a man-down as sophomore Sasa Labovic received two yellow cards in the match and was disqualified from play.
Continuing to play a man down, DePaul's defense created another scoring opportunity off a counter-attack clearance by Michael Mojarro. With a long ball from the far side of the pitch, Mojarro connected with El-Shafei down the near side of the field. El-Shafei sprinted past the final Golden Eagle defender and netted the one-on-one chance past Marquette's diving goalkeeper.
