The Blue Demons challenged the Golden Eagles in a tough second set but could not soar above MU.
CHICAGO – The Blue Demons put up a fight in the second set, but could not soar above the Golden Eagles, dropping 3-0 (14-25, 25-27, 14-25) Saturday at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Marquette jumped out to a 2-0 lead but DePaul quickly cut it in half with a kill from Claire Anderson. With Marquette increasing their lead 12-4, a monstrous Emma Price kill tacked on one more and sparked some momentum for the Blue Demons, with a Mattie Norris kill following and the Blue Demons winning a long rally to cut the deficit in half again, to 14-7. A pair of Marquette attack errors brought DePaul closer but Marquette went on a 3-0 run, forcing a Blue Demon timeout. The first point out of the stoppage went to the Golden Eagles, but Donna Brown pounced on the ball to make DePaul's score double-digits. With DePaul threatening and forcing more lengthy rallies out of Marquette, the Golden Eagles capitalized on more opportunities, taking the first set 25-14.
A DePaul error gave Marquette the first point, but the Blue Demons quickly made up for it when Avarie Evans-Allen and Donna Brown struck the ball into MU territory to even the score at 2's. The score knotted again at 4's but a Donna Brown kill sparked a 2-0 run that put the Blue Demons up 6-4. The score evened again two more times, but Marquette escaped into the lead but a 5-0 run from DePaul featuring a block from the pair of Evans-Allen and De La Rosa and a pair of MU attack errors, and back-to-back Evans-Allen kills put DePaul up 13-9. Back-to-back Anderson kills increased the Blue Demon lead to 15-10. With the Golden Eagles catching up at 17's, kills from Price and Brown reintroduced the DePaul lead at 19-17. Marquette brought the difference to one at 20-19, forcing a DePaul timeout. DePaul earned the first point out of the stoppage to maintain the lead. Marquette would reach set point, forcing a DPU timeout, but the Blue Demons would capitalize on the next two plays out of the stoppage on Anderson and Price kills, lifting the Blue Demons ahead 25-24. Regardless of a tight set, MU would take their second, 27-25.
With Marquette jumping out to a 6-3 lead, DePaul took the next two points courtesy of a Brown kill and an MU attack error to bring the score within one at 6-5. With Marquette reaching an 11-5 lead, Maddie Torti came out of a DePaul timeout with a kill to tack on one more for the Blue Demons. With Marquette scoring six of the next 10 points, the Golden Eagles took a 17-9 lead. While the Blue Demons kept the Golden Eagles on their toes, Marquette went on to take the final set 25-14.
DePaul will return home one last time in the stretch this Wednesday, hosting conference foe Xavier in a 6:00 p.m. match.
