Blue Demons erase 11-point deficit to record third straight win
CHICAGO – DePaul had to go an extra five minutes, but it was worth it as the Blue Demons won for the third time in as many games this season with a 72-70 overtime win over Penn State. The game was the second meeting between in the programs in the annual Gavitt Tipoff Games.
The Blue Demons fell behind early Thursday evening as the Nittany Lions scored the first 11 points of the game to force a DePaul timeout with 17:01 remaining in the opening half. However, the host would not stay dormant for long, roaring back with a 10-3 run over the next five minutes, to pull within four at 14-10 with 12:48 to go before the intermission.
Penn State would score five of the next seven points to move ahead 19-12, but the Blue Demons kept the pressure on the visitor. With 10:15 to go in the first half, sophomore Paul Reed cleverly finished in the post to cap a 7-0 run for DePaul, tying the game at 19.
With 5:47 left in the first half, Penn State led 22-21 before Devin Gage took over. The sophomore point guard got to the line, nailed a jump shot and then finished through contact for a spectacular three-point play to give him seven points in a one minute and 27 second span and put DePaul ahead for the first time in the game at 27-26.
DePaul (3-0) took a 36-31 advantage at halftime and the two teams combined to score 17 points in the first four and a half minutes of the second half. Five early second half points from Max Strus led the way for the host, as a three-pointer from the senior put DePaul back ahead 43-41 as a media timeout stopped action on the floor with 15:42 to go in the game.
The Blue Demons opened up a 10-point advantage capped by a an arena-shaking alley-oop three-point play from Strus brought the Wintrust Arena crowd to its feet with just over nine minutes left. Strus finished the night with 21 points and nine rebounds with 15 of the 21 coming in the second half.
Two free throws by Jaylen Butz once again pushed the lead to 10 with 3:41 to go, but the Nittany Lions stormed back with 10 straight points and tied the game at 68-68 forcing overtime.
In the extra period, DePaul held Penn State to just two free throws and built a four-point lead before a final miss by the Nittany Lions was corralled by Strus just before the buzzer.
Penn State (2-1) was led by 25 points and 12 rebounds from Lamar Stevens while Myles Dread added 19 points.
Gage finished with a career-high 14 points to with four steals and three assists while Butz grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds with eight points. Femi Olujobi added 13 points and four boards off the bench and Eli Cain finished with seven rebounds, six assists and five points.
DePaul doesn't play for just over a week as the university is in the midst of Autumn quarter exams. Following the break, the Blue Demons pick up the schedule at Notre Dame on Saturday, Nov. 24. Start time at Purcell Pavilion is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT on ACC Network Extra and WSCR (670 AM).

- The 11-point deficit that was erased in the first half was the largest since turning around a 15-point deficit against Drake on Nov. 30, 2016.
- The Blue Demons are now 1-3 in the Gavitt Tipoff Games... Thursday was the second meeting with Penn State in the event.
- Jaylen Butz pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds... it was his second career games with 10 or more rebounds... he is the first player to grab at least 15 rebounds since Cleveland Melvin totaled 15 rebounds at St. John's on Feb. 20, 2012.
- Eli Cain's five points moved him up to 29th on DePaul's all-time scoring list... he has 1,218 points.
- Devin Gage set a career-high in scoring for the second straight game with 14 points... on Monday against Morgan State he scored a then-career best 13 points.
- Max Strus has started the season with three straight 20-point game... he scored in double-figures in 29 of 34 games at DePaul.
