Blue Demons face defending national champion Saturday at Wintrust Arena
CHICAGO – You won't find a much bigger challenge than the one No. 15/15 DePaul faces at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wintrust Arena.
The South Loop will be buzzing when defending national champion No. 1/1 Notre Dame hits town after winning its first two games by an average of 32.5 points.
But this is precisely why all the current Blue Demons and their four future teammates who signed letters of intent on Wednesday gravitate towards Lincoln Park.
They want to be measured against the absolute best the NCAA has to offer.
After working out the kinks and preseason jitters in last Friday's season opener against Green Bay, coach Doug Bruno's players are looking to raise their collective game for 40 minutes this weekend.
It was encouraging to see sixth-year senior Rebekah Dahlman finish her first complete game as a Blue Demon last week after missing all but 17 minutes of the 2017-18 season with an injury.
Dahlman led the charge as DePaul (1-0) went on a 17-0 run in the middle of the fourth quarter for a 73-64 victory over a talented Green Bay team that led most of the night. Dahlman scored a team-high 21 points and went 11-for-12 from the free throw line.
Also making key contributions at McGrath-Phillips Arena were Ashton Millender with 15 points, Tanita Allen (10 points, seven rebounds, four assists), Dee Bekelja (eight points) and Kelly Campbell with five points, six rebounds, six steals and four assists.
It will take the same intensity and focus the Blue Demons displayed last year in a 91-82 loss at Notre Dame last December. DePaul battled the nation's second-ranked team virtually even for three quarters as Ashton Millender led the Blue Demons with 18 points while Amarah Coleman scored 17 and Chante Stonewall had 16 points.
It took a total team effort and balanced offense to offset Notre Dame's Jessica Shepard who scored 39 points.
After falling behind by double digits in the fourth quarter, DePaul fought back with a late 6-0 run. Coleman's three-point play made brought her team within 81-75, but that was the closest the Blue Demons would come.
On Saturday, Bruno & Co. will need contributions up and down their 11-deep rotation to overcome the Fighting Irish's talented trio of Arike Ogunbowale (25.5 points a game), Shepard (22.5 points, eight rebounds) and Brianna Turner (13.5 points, 10.5 rebounds).
