The sophomore netted a header 26' in for her first goal this season
MINNEAPOLIS - The DePaul women's soccer team played an energetic game against the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Thursday evening in Minneapolis, securing a 1-0 win for their third victory of the 2018 season. This victory pushes their overall record to 3-1.Â
The Blue Demons put up six shots on the night while the Gophers had seven attempts - both teams with four shots on goal. DePaul rookie goalkeeper Mollie Eriksson made four key saves in the net to prevent Minnesota from getting on the board. The opening-half header from sophomore defender Jackie Batliner was the result of a cross from redshirt sophomore defender Avery Hay 38 yards out. The goal marked Batliner's first collegiate goal as a Blue Demon.Â
"It was very exciting to score my first collegiate goal," Batliner said."As the ball was coming at me, all I could focus on was the ball and making sure I was able to get a head on the ball. It's amazing having such a supportive group of teammates who put in so much effort and battle until the last play of the game."Â
Minnesota is the second Big Ten opponent the Blue Demons have topped this season, after recording a 3-1 victory over Illinois a week ago. Head coach Erin Chastain was pleased with her squad's performance on both sides of the ball.
"Jackie's goal was a great goal," Chastain said. "She made a great weakside run and her execution on the header was very good. Jackie finishes every play. The defensive effort was phenomenal - everyone committed to every play."
Chastain returned to her Alma Mater for the first time since 2013 seeking a win on the pitch this time as the coach of the Blue Demons.
"It's definitely emotional to be back at my alma mater," Chastain said. "I had a special experience at Minnesota and wish their program all the success in the world. But, I just love our program and the young women I coach at DePaul and it's been fun creating something special here."Â
