Max de Bruijne scored the goal for DePaul
CHICAGO - The Blue Demons could not overcome a 2-1 deficit on Friday evening as the Oakland Grizzlies claimed victory in the first game of the Chicago Classic at Wish Field.Â
DePaul found themselves down 2-0 in the 60th minute, with both goals coming in a matter of that minute. The first goal came in the 16th second from junior midfielder Corentin Diverres. Then in the 42nd second, a penalty kick scored by Nebojsa Popovic doubled the lead, 2-0.Â
Junior defender Max de Bruijne scored his first career goal as a Blue Demon late in the 84th minute to put his team back in the game and cut the Grizzlies' lead in half, 2-1. Senior midfielder Harry Hilling nabbed an assist on the goal after servicing a corner kick. de Bruijne and freshman forward Jack Richards notched two shots a piece, Richards with one on goal.Â
After a defensive struggle that left each team scoreless in the first half, the second half proved to be more energetic and intense for DePaul, earning three corner kicks and allowing Oakland none. The Blue Demons were outshot 9-6 with sophomore goalkeeper Drew Nuelle making four saves in between the pipes.Â
"We're disappointed with the loss obviously, trying to find positives in it - knowing that the last ten minutes we finally found a sense of urgency to fight and get one back and a couple other chances," head coach Mark Plotkin said. "Hopefully, we can bring some of that mentality and find that more on Sunday.
Plotkin said the biggest thing he wants to improve on is the squad's approach.Â
"We didn't exactly start fighting, believing or battling until we we were down 2-0, which was a little too late," Plotkin said. "So if we can find that more in the first half and earlier on in the second half, I think we'll have a better chance on Sunday."
"(LMU) is going to be very tough. They played tonight against a very tough Loyola-Chicago team so we're going to do some great recovery stuff tomorrow and get the guys ready to go on Sunday."
