CHICAGO - DePaul men's soccer recorded their second shutout of the season against Loyola Marymount on Sunday, 3-0, at Wish Field in the final game of the Chicago Classic.Â
Three Blue Demons were named to the All-Tournament Team: Harry Hilling, Max de Bruijne and Drew Nuelle.Â
Looking to rebound from Friday's loss, the Blue Demons took the pitch ready for what lied ahead of them and to defend their fortress.Â
"This win is huge," senior captain Harry Hilling said. "It was minor hiccup on Friday and defending the fortress today is bigtime. We knew we had to come out here and get a good result and that's just what we did. Hopefully, moving forward the team realizes this is our home turf and we have to keep defending it at all costs."
While the first half ended with no score, it didn't take long for the Blue Demons to get on board. About a minute later, sophomore midfielder Isaac Friendt would notch his first career goal on Wish Field with an assist from senior captain Harry Hilling to put DePaul in the lead, 1-0.Â
"It's awesome," Friendt said. "It was a nice opening goal to have for the game. It eased the tension we had going in at halftime knowing that we needed to catch an early lead. It was good to score my first goal on Wish Field and I'm excited about it."
To double the lead, sophomore midfielder Istvan Wilhelms netted his first goal of the season, heading the ball past the goalkeeper's hands with assists from freshman forward Jake Fuderer and junior forward Zach El-Shafei. Another first goal of the season for a Blue Demon would come in the 81st minute from senior midfielder Bryan Simons to put DePaul up 3-0 and seal the deal.Â
Head coach Mark Plotkin was impressed with his team's approach to Sunday's game, compared to Friday's.Â
"I think we just went back to the basics," Plotkin said. "I almost took it on myself to just go back - we talked a little bit too much about the offensive tactical things. I talked to them and said let's just focus on defending, have a great defensive effort (because) a lot of the attacking stuff will come from there. Thankfully it did today.
"I thought the guys were fantastic today - on the ball, off the ball - particularly on the defensive side of things," Plotkin said. "I couldn't have been more proud of their full performance. After the game on Friday, we were pretty disappointed with our whole performance, so we just went back to the drawing board and said let's get back to who we are as a team and the culture, and that's a defensive first mentality and thankful to see a lot of the great attacking elements came out today."Â
