CHICAGO – Behind a rock-solid defense and an opportunistic attack, DePaul came away with a well-deserved 1-0 nonconference victory Thursday over Red Line rival Loyola at Wish Field.
It was the Blue Demons fourth win in their last five matches and improved their season record to 4-2-0 while the Ramblers fell to 3-4-0.
In that span, coach Erin Chastain's side has outscored the opposition 13-2.
A sturdy back line featuring Avery Hay, Sydney Parker, Adrian and Gwen Walker limited Loyola to three shots and one corner kick in the first half.
That set the stage for the defining moment of this match in 52nd minute. Senior forward Franny Cerny attacked on the right side and executed a nice crossover move before slipping a textbook pass to teammate Morgan Turner.
Turner was positioned at the top of the box, and the sophomore forward took it from there. Her shot found an opening on the left side of the net for her fifth goal of the season.
Along with an assist, Turner now has 11 points in just six matches. For Cerny, it was her second assist to go along with four goals and a total of 10 points.
The Blue Demons kept the pressure on Loyola in the second half with four shots on goal against visiting goalkeeper Maddie Hausmann. The Ramblers took eight shots in the final 45 minutes but none were on target.
Freshman goalie Mollie Eriksson picked up her second clean sheet of the season. Eriksson, Ellie Mink, Adrian Walker, Cerny, Hay, Elizabeth Parrilli and Parker played the entire 90 minutes.
Chastain & Co. will look to maintain their winning ways on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match against Loyola Marymount at Wish Field.
