Blue Demons ready for bounce-back performance Friday night
CHICAGO – It's time to take their show on the road as the Blue Demons head to Washington, D.C. for a Friday game against BIG EAST adversary Georgetown.
Coach Doug Bruno and his players will be wary of a Hoyas team that pulled off an 86-85 upset of DePaul last season in McGrath-Phillips Arena.
DePaul (10-5, 1-2 in the BIG EAST) will attack Georgetown (8-7, 2-2) with the nation's fourth-highest scoring offense that leads the country in three-pointers, three-point attempts and three-pointers per game.
The Blue Demons are also No. 4 in assists, No. 6 in free throw percentage, No. 7 in assists per game and No. 14 in assist-turnover ratio.
The team's leading scorer Ashton Millender (13.4 points a game) is No. 17 in the country in three-point attempts while teammate Kelly Campbell is No. 18 in assist-turnover ratio.
Senior forward Mart'e Grays (12.6 points a game) has turned in back-to-back double-doubles and was named to this week's BIG EAST Honor Roll. Junior forward Chante Stonewall is averaging 12.6 points per game.
After closing out the nonconference portion of the schedule with five consecutive wins, DePaul has stumbled twice in the last three games. Bruno & Co. will look to create a winning rhythm throughout the rest of the conference season.
Freshmen Lexi Held and Sonya Morris continue to make valuable contributions in support of the upperclassmen. Held has scored in double figures five times in the last six games and been honored twice as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Morris continues to provide a spark off the bench and was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Dec. 31.
Georgetown has opened the conference season playing .500 ball, knocking off Xavier at home and Providence on the road while losing to Butler at home and Creighton on the road. The Hoyas are 8-7 overall after opening the regular season with three-straight victories.
Their calling card has been a defense that is holding opponents to an average of 55.7 points a game. Heading up that effort is Preseason All-BIG EAST guard Dionna White who has led the league in steals the last three years.
White leads her team in scoring at 15.6 points a game and is also tops in rebounds, assists, steals, field goal and free throw percentage. Dorothy Adomako averages 13.4 points and Mikayla Venson is scoring 11.5 points a game.
