Blue Demons ready for memorable performance in historic Hinkle Fieldhouse
CHICAGO – The Blue Demons are headed for one of their biggest games of the conference season on Friday, and it will take place at an historic site.
DePaul (13-6, 4-3 in the BIG EAST) is traveling to Indianapolis for a showdown with Butler, who is off to a 16-2 start including 6-1 in the BIG EAST.
The Bulldogs play their home games in iconic Hinkle Fieldhouse, scene of the storied Indiana high school hoops team from Milan that was the subject of the movie "Hoosiers" starring Gene Hackman. The movie was shot at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
NBA Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson won two state titles at "Indiana's Basketball Cathedral," and UCLA's legendary coach John Wooden lost a state final there as a high school coach.
The Blue Demons will be looking to jump-start their attack while striving to develop a consistent offensive rhythm.
Ashton Millender (13.1 points a game) has the potential to get the ball going on both when she is lighting it up from beyond the three-point arc. Millender will enter Hinkle Fieldhouse No. 14 in the country in three-point attempts and No. 26 in three-point baskets.
Chante Stonewall leads the team in scoring at 13.2 points a game and is also tops in steals with 43. The junior forward is second in rebounding (6.9 per game) to Kelly Campbell's 7.6. Campbell is the team leader in assists with 4.7 a game and is No. 20 in the nation in assist-turnover ratio.
Senior forward Mart'e Grays is becoming a solid force down low while averaging nearly 13 points a game. That inside presence helps to open up good looks for DePaul's perimeter shooters.
Coach Doug Bruno's team leads the country in three-pointers, three-point attempts and threes per game. The Blue Demons are No. 6 in assists, No. 7 in free throw percentage, No. 8 in assists per game, No. 11 in scoring offense (81.8 points a game) and No. 17 in assist-turnover ratio.
Butler (16-2, 6-1) is receiving votes in the USA Today/Coaches poll. The Bulldogs have won 10 of their last 11 games, having a nine-game winning streak snapped at Providence last weekend. They rebounded with a 75-43 victory at Creighton.
Whitney Jennings leads the team at 15.1 points a game followed by Tori Schickel (12.4 points, 9.1 rebounds, 24 blocks) and Kristen Spolyar (11.8 points). Michelle Weaver tops Butler in assists at 4.5 a game and in steals with 3.8 a game. The Bulldogs are holding opponents to an average of 52.1 points per game.
