Paul Reed leads four in double figures with 20 points and nine rebounds
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Blue Demons battled all afternoon, but the Providence Friars had just enough to hold off DePaul, 70-67, on Saturday at Dunkin' Donuts Center. Paul Reed led DePaul with 20 points and nine rebounds as four players finished in double figures.
The opening quarter of the game played even as the teams combined for just 10 points over the first seven minutes of action. Providence started to open up a lead and A.J. Reeves' second three-pointer put Providence up 18-8 with 10:06 left in the first half.
Untimely turnovers led to transition points for the Friars as they maintained at least a seven-point advantage for a 10-minute stretch of the first half. DePaul didn't let Providence pull away as the Blue Demons closed the first half with a 10-3 run over the final five minutes and the score stood at 33-27 at halftime in favor of the Friars.
Femi Olujobi wasted no time out of the break as he scored six straight points and his three-pointer tied the score at 33-33 just under a minute into the second half.
Providence responded by scoring eight of the game's next 10 points and took a 41-35 lead at the 16-minute mark. Similar to the first half, the Friars held the Blue Demons within a few possessions until a flurry pulled DePaul to within two with 6:08 left on a three-pointer by Reed in the right corner.
The teams traded baskets over the next four possessions before Providence scored five straight points and led 64-57 with 2:59 on the clock.
DePaul (11-8, 3-5 BIG EAST) made one final charge and pulled to within a point twice in the final 10 seconds, but Providence was able to knock down free throws and defend the final possession by the Blue Demons for a 70-67 final score.
Reed totaled 20 points, nine rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals. Olujobi finished with 14 points and five boards while Devin Gage scored 11 points with five assists, four boards, two steals and a blocked shot. Max Strus was the fourth player in double figures with 10 points and four rebounds.
Providence (13-7, 3-4 BIG EAST) was led by Alpha Diallo's 20 points and nine rebounds.
DePaul returns to Wintrust Arena on Wednesday night to face Villanova. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m. on CBS Sports Network and WIND (560 AM).
