BIG EAST favorites collide in Friday night showdown in Milwaukee
CHICAGO – This is the game everyone in the BIG EAST has been eagerly anticipating, a marquee matchup in Milwaukee Friday night between No. 24/24 DePaul and No. 20/16 Marquette.
It promises to be a highly entertaining performance by a pair of explosive offenses that will be televised nationwide by FS1.
DePaul (10-4, 1-1) comes into the Al McGuire Center averaging 86.5 points per game while their rival to the north is scoring at an 84-point clip.
The Blue Demons have topped the century mark three times this season led by a program-record 124 points against Savannah State. The Golden Eagles (11-3, 2-0) have reached triple digits twice.
Coach Doug Bruno's program leads the all-time series 44-27 with a 28-6 mark at home and 11-20 on the road. In the last 10 meetings, the Blue Demons hold a 6-4 edge. They won the last two games before dropping the previous four. They won four in a row in the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons.
These two BIG EAST heavyweights share a mutual affection for an up-tempo style racing up and down the court. Both lineups are populated with multiple scoring options and players with the potential for a big-scoring night.
This will be just the second Associated Press Top 25 showdown in BIG EAST play since conference realignment. The first one came on Jan. 5, 2016 when the No. 24 Blue Demons defeated No. 25 Seton Hall 86-74.
DePaul is making quite an impression on the NCAA basketball national landscape, coming into Friday night's game ranking No. 1 in the country in four offensive categories. The Blue Demons are peerless when it comes to three-pointers, three-point attempts, threes per game and total assists.
They also rank No. 4 in the nation in scoring offense and free throw percentage, No. 6 in assists per game and No. 12 in assist-turnover ratio.
Ashton Millender is No. 12 in the nation in three-point attempts and No. 19 in three-pointers. Kelly Campbell is No. 18 in assist-turnover ratio, No. 24 in steals and No. 25 in assists.
Millender (238 career three-pointers) needs 11 more connections from deep to pass WNBA All-Star Allie Quigley for third all-time in DePaul history and is within range of No. 2 Brittany Hrynko (281).
Millender leads the Blue Demons averaging 13.8 points a game followed by Chante Stonewall at 13.2 and Mart'e Grays at 12.4. Kelly Campbell tops the team in rebounds, assists and steals.
Marquette has won five of its last six with the loss coming against No. 2/2 Notre Dame. The Golden Eagles are led by Allazia Blockton at 16.5 points a game. Natisha Hiedeman is next at 16.1 points followed by Erika Davenport (11.9 points, 7.9 rebounds) and Danielle King (11 points).
