Blue Demons Out of Sync in 96-63 Loss at No. 20/16 Marquette
MILWAUKEE – Seemingly just about everything that could go wrong for No. 24/24 DePaul did exactly that Friday night in a BIG EAST showdown televised by FS 1.
Before a fired-up Al McGuire Center crowd, the visiting Blue Demons lost 96-63 to No. 20/16 Marquette in a marquee matchup of the BIG EAST preseason favorites.
Mart'e Grays had another solid performance with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Ashton Millender had 11 points and five rebounds.
The Blue Demons (10-5, 1-2) were unable to cut into an 18-point halftime deficit in the third quarter. The Golden Eagles maintained a consistent offense and led 59-37 with more than four minutes left in the period.
Marquette (12-3, 3-1) scored seven unanswered points in a minute to increase the advantage to 66-37 with 3:23 left. Unable to generate any kind of offensive rhythm, DePaul fell behind 74-40 after three quarters.
It could not have been a rougher beginning as DePaul fell behind right from the opening tip. Marquette had a 9-5 lead when it launched a 20-2 run.
The Blue Demons wound up trailing 29-9 after the first quarter. They made 4-of-16 shots in the first 10 minutes while the home team hit 12-of-22 including 5-of-11 from deep. DePaul was 1-for-9 from beyond the arc. The visiting team finished 5-of-31 from distance.
Grays was the lone scoring threat for much of the first half. Her three-point play early in the second quarter made it 41-22.
Rebekah Dahlman scored five-straight and Millender's layup brought left their team with a 48-30 deficit at halftime.
Grays had 16 points and six rebounds in the first 20 minutes. Her team made 3-of-13 from long distance in the first half.
The Blue Demons will look to bounce back next Friday at Georgetown.
