Four in double figures leads Blue Demons over Eagles on Saturday
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Charlie Moore drilled a pair of clutch three-pointers while Paul Reed and Romeo Weems recorded double-doubles as DePaul claimed its sixth straight win to open the 2019-20 season. Moore finished with a game-high 24 points along with double-figure games from Jaylen Butz, Reed and Weems.
The game was back-and-forth throughout the first half and into the second before Moore scored on a driving layup to give the Blue Demons their first double-digit advantage with just over 15 minutes left on the clock.
Darious Hall scored in the paint for DePaul's largest lead of the game at 54-41 midway through the second half, but Boston College wasn't ready to go away. The Eagles stormed back and pulled to within three with 3:23 left and trimmed the deficit to a point with a minute left in the game.
Derryck Thornton scored to make the score 62-61 before Moore drilled a three-pointer on DePaul's next possession. After another basket by Boston College, it was Moore again with another three-pointer from the top of the key to seal the game for the Blue Demons. Weems kept the play alive to set up Moore after he rebounded his own miss to find more for the 23-footer.
On Boston College's next possession, Reed swatted away Thornton's final attempt before Jalen Coleman-Land and Moore knocked down four straight free throws for the 72-67 final.
Moore added eight assists and four rebounds while Weems totaled 17 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and two assists. Reed secured his fifth double-double in six games this season with 11 points, 10 boards and four blocked shots and Butz scored 11 points with six rebounds, two blocked shots and two assists.
As a team, DePaul (6-0) outrebounded Boston College by a 47-28 margin and the Blue Demons hit 10-of-12 free throws in the second half to finish the game at 14-for-18 at the free throw line.
Thornton led Boston College (4-2) with 16 points while Julian Rishwain added 15 off the bench.
DePaul returns to Wintrust Arena on Tuesday night to face Central Michigan. Start time is 7 p.m on FS1 on WSCR 670 The Score. The game is the second half of a DePaul basketball doubleheader following the women's team hosting Milwaukee at 4:30 p.m.
