Blue Demons erase 18-point halftime deficit with spectacular second half
CHICAGO - In a game that was the very definition of a story of two halves, DePaul roared back over the final 20 minutes to erase an 18-point deficit in an 88-75 victory over Central Michigan. With the win, the Blue Demons remain undefeated nearly a full month into their 2019-20 campaign.
Three Blue Demons finished with double-doubles on the night as Paul Reed posted 23 points and 11 rebounds, Charlie Moore finished with 18 points and 13 assists and Jaylen Butz added 15 points and 11 rebounds. Jalen Coleman-Lands also had his best game as a Blue Demon, scoring a DePaul-high 21 points on a career-high six three-pointers.
As a team, the Blue Demons shot a scalding .579 (22-38) in the second half including .455 (5-11) mark from three-point land. DePaul (7-0) held Central Michigan to just eight field goals in the second half and the Blue Demons outrebounded the Chippewas by a 49-35 margin on the glass.
Midway through the first half, the Chippewas lead stood at 26-15, before growing to 15 at 35-20. DePaul had an immediate answer though as Romeo Weems came up with big steals on back-to-back possessions, leading to easy transition buckets. On the next trip down the court, Moore stripped the Central Michigan player attacking, feeding Oscar Lopez Jr. who converted on one-of-two free throws to make it 35-25.
Down the stretch of the first half, Central Michigan (5-2) regained the momentum to go into the break leading the Blue Demon by a score of 50-32.
A second half that was one for the ages began as Reed scored four straights points punctuated by an alley oop off a Moore inbound pass. Following a DePaul stop, Moore found Coleman-Lands for a corner three, cutting the visitor's advantage to 11.
Three and a half minutes later the deficit was down to five points as Coleman-Lands knocked down another deep three, making it 56-51 with 14:58 to play. DePaul would keep its foot on the gas pedal, and with 12:05 on the clock, Butz came up with a big offensive rebound before going back up for an old-fashioned three-point play to trim the deficit to a point. On the next play, Moore found Reed in transition for two points, giving DePaul their first lead since 17:52 in the first half to send Wintrust Arena into a frenzy.
Down the stretch, the momentum continued to lie completely with DePaul and with 7:47 to play, Coleman-Lands hit his sixth of the game, pushing the Blue Demon lead up to nine points at 69-60. Just under three minutes later Reed turned his own three-point miss into a traditional three-point play to push the DePaul advantage to 40-14 in the second half and the score to 74-64.
Over the final three minutes, DePaul added two highlights, a Reed to Butz alley-oop with 2:08 on the clock and a Darious Hall three-point play with 1:45 to play, but the Chippewas would not get closer than seven points. Hall finished the game with nine points and eight rebounds off the bench.
Central Michigan was led by Dallas Morgan who scored 20 points for the Chippewas.
DePaul returns to action on Friday as the Blue Demons travel north to face Minnesota. Start time is 2 p.m. on FS1 on WIND 560 AM.
