Blue Demons fall 74-69 to Buffalo on Sunday at Wintrust Arena
CHICAGO – Four Blue Demons finished in double figures, but a 19-point second half deficit proved too much as DePaul suffered its first loss Sunday evening, 74-69, against Buffalo at Wintrust Arena.
Jalen Coleman-Lands finished with a team-high 17 points while Paul Reed delivered a gaudy stat line of 15 points, 18 rebounds, five blocked shots and four steals. Rounding out the Blue Demons in double figures for scoring Romeo Weems posted 13 points while Jaylen Butz added 11.
DePaul was outrebounded by a 53-40 margin and the two sides combined for 37 turnovers.
The Blue Demons came out gunning early, grabbing a 8-5 lead just over four minutes into the action as Charlie Moore knocked down a pull up three-pointer off a screen. Buffalo (6-3) would respond immediately, using 9-0 run to move in front 16-10 as a time out stopped action on the floor with 11:53 to play in the first half.
Three minutes later the Blue Demons pulled back within one point, at 18-17, as Reed hit a jump shot late in the shot clock, Markese Jacobs drilled a three-pointer and then Reed added two more points on a jump hook. With 7:54 on the clock, DePaul moved back into the lead at 21-20 as Moore went coast to coast off a steal for a layup.
Down the stretch of the first half, DePaul would get some nifty passing courtesy of Nick Ogenda who, working out of the post, found a cutting Moore who delivered a touch pass to Reed who slammed the ball home for two points to make it 28-24 in favor of DePaul.
With 2:26 on the clock, Jaylen Butz backed his smaller defender down, before finishing through contact to make it 30-29. However, over the final minute and 13 seconds the Bulls would go on an 8-0 run to enter the half leading 37-30.
Out of the halftime break the Bulls continued their momentum from the end of the first half, scoring the first ten points to move in front 17 points as DePaul called a timeout with 17:44 on the clock.
Over the next eight minutes, DePaul would cut the Buffalo advantage to 12 points as just past the midway point of second half the score stood, 56-44. With 8:06 on the clock, a floater from Reed pulled DePaul back within nine points, extending the Blue Demons run to 12-2.
However, with 6:27 on the clock the Bulls lead was back up to 15.
Down the stretch DePaul would made its move. With 5:12 on the clock Coleman-Lands knocked down a three. Then, with 3:15 to play, Romeo Weems came off a screen for a catch and shoot three-pointer. Finally, with 1:42 to go Coleman-Lands scooped up an offensive rebound before going up to pull DePaul within four at 66-62.
Over the final minute, the Blue Demons would get to within three points, but could not complete the comeback as Buffalo knocked down a pair of free throws to make it a five-point game with five seconds on the clock.
Buffalo's Jayvon Graves led all scorers with 21 points and seven rebounds while Ronaldo Segu chipped in 14 points.
DePaul returns to action on Saturday as the Blue Demons host UIC for a 1 p.m. tip at Wintrust Arena. The game can be seen on FS1 while WSCR (670 AM) will be the home of the action on the radio.
