Trio of Home Runs Propel DePaul Offense Past IUPUI

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - What started as a back-and-forth battle of the offenses ended in DePaul's favor in a 11-8 win over IUPUI Sunday morning on the final day of Memphis Tournament contests.
In the victory, Cara Jimenez launched her first home run of the season and later in the game slammed out a second home run to propel the Blue Demon offense forward. Kate Polucha also slammed a home run that drove in three runs.
IUPUI was the first to strike after bringing in a lone runner in the top of the first.
DePaul would steal the lead in the bottom of the second on a two-run home run from Cara Jimenez that scored Gabby O'Riley who singled earlier.
The next two runs would be scored by IUPUI to lift the Jags into a 3-2 lead and Krista Dalgarn entered the game to replace Natalie Halvorson on the bump.
The bottom of the fifth was a powerhouse inning at the plate for the Blue Demons. Jimenez launched her second home run of the game to tie the score 3-3. Skylor Hilger singled to shortstop and advanced to second on a passed ball. A deep single from Angela Scalzitti would bring Hilger home to put DePaul back in the lead.
Before the conclusion of the fifth inning, Kate Polucha exploded for a three-run home run that would put the Blue Demons in a 7-3 lead after scoring Jessica Cothern and Scalzitti.
When it seemed that DePaul had the advantage secured, IUPUI went off for a five-run sixth inning to lead 8-7.
The bottom half of the sixth would ultimately make the difference and determine the fate of the game, as DePaul brought in the last four runs of the game.
Pearl Barroso reached on a fielder's choice and Jimenez was walked. Hilger singled through the left side to load up the bases. Barroso and Jimenez scored on singles from Maranda Gutierrez and Scalzitti. Hilger scored on a fielder's choice and Gutierrez hustled home on a Polucha single for the final run of the game.
DePaul will play in one final contest in the Memphis Tournament today at 1:00 p.m. CT against Belmont.
