First Home Win for Adix-Zins is Achieved
3/30/2019 2:38:00 PM | SOFTBALL
Alike Wednesday's win over Northwestern, the Blue Demons brought in the bulk of their runs in the sixth inning. A four-run sixth inning saw back-to-back home runs with a three-run blast from Jessica Cothern, directly followed by a solo shot from Morgan Greenwood. Cothern's home run marked her fifth of the season to lead the team and Greenwood tallied her fourth to match O'Riley and Gutierrez for the second-most.
Natalie Halvorson entered the circle for the Blue Demons in the fourth inning and went on to be the winning pitcher, increasing her record to 13-5 on the season.
After holding SHU to a scoreless first half-inning of play, the Blue Demons were the first on the board in the bottom half. Cothern reached on a single to shortstop and advanced to second on a single from Greenwood. After advancing to third, Cothern would be brought home on a single from Gabby O'Riley for the first run of the game.
DePaul would score the next three runs of the game to go up 4-0. In the bottom of the second, the first and second bases quickly filled up after Alysia Rodriguez was walked and Erin Andris singled to the pitcher. After advancing to second and third, the two hustled home on a deep Cothern single to center field.
In the top of the fourth, the Pirates would put up three runs to close in on the deficit and force a DePaul pitching change.
With Halvorson in the circle, SHU offense would remain quiet in the remainder of the fourth inning and the entirety of the fifth.
The top of the sixth saw an energetic offensive burst from DePaul, with the Blue Demons bringing in four runs to regain a comfortable lead. Brianna Viles and Angela Scalzitti both reached on singles before circling home on a three-run blast from Cothern. Greenwood then launched a solo homer for what would be DePaul's last run of the game.
The Pirates would score three runs in the top of the seventh in one final attempt and were able to make it a two-run difference but could not surpass DPU.
With two games remaining in the series against Seton Hall, a doubleheader will be played tomorrow at Cacciatore Stadium set to begin at 11:00 a.m. CT.
