Blue Demons down Flames 6-3 on West Side
CHICAGO – Early offense and late fireworks led DePaul softball to a 6-3 victory over UIC Wednesday afternoon at Flames Field. The Blue Demons jumped out to an early lead and held off a late rally from the Flames to even the series between the crosstown foes while extending their win streak to three games.
Sophomore right fielder Jolie Adams led the offensive charge for the Blue Demons, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs for her 10th multi-hit game of the season. Lydia Ettema drove in three runs on two hits, while Morgan Rogers reached base three times with a double, two hits, and scored three runs. Sophomore first baseman Chelsea Parker added a hit and an RBI to push her season total to a team-high 35 runs driven in.
Senior right-hander Kelly Greene got the start in the circle, going 2.2 innings at the outset and allowing just one earned run on three hits before giving way to Hannah Messer in the bottom of the third inning. The sophomore tossed 1.1 innings and allowed three hits while being charged with two runs. Bella Nigey entered in the fifth and worked 1.2 innings, allowing three hits, before Greene re-entered in the sixth and went the distance, earning the win to move to 4-5 on the season.
How It Happened
A one-out double from Rogers moved to third on a passed ball before Adams roped a base hit to shallow right to score the game's first run. Parker reached on an error in the ensuing at-bat before Ettema doubled to left center to plate Adams and make it 2-0. The Blue Demons left the bases loaded.
DePaul (15-24) added another run in the second to extend its advantage to 3-0 as Adams drove in her second run of the day, scoring Rogers, who drew a walk and moved into scoring position on a stolen base.
UIC (19-25-1) applied pressure in the home half of the third as a one-out single came around to score following a passed ball and an infield hit to make it 3-1. A walk and a fielding error prompted a pitching change for the Blue Demons, as Messer entered with two outs and the bases loaded. The right-hander induced a flyout to limit the damage.
The Flames had four straight batters reach to start the fifth inning, scoring a run on a base hit up the middle before tying the game on a sacrifice fly to center field to make it 3-3. Nigey recorded a strikeout to leave the bases loaded.
UIC loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but Greene's re-entry induced the final out of the inning to keep the game tied heading into the final frame.
The Blue Demons reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh as Rogers drew a leadoff walk and moved into scoring position on a UIC error. Parker's double to left center plated Rogers for the go-ahead run before Ettema's home run extended the lead to 6-3, which held as the final score.
