Scalzitti's Walk-off Double in Extra Innings Secures Win

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Blue Demons topped non-conference foe Illinois State 6-5 by walk-off fashion in extra innings of play Tuesday evening at Cacciatore Stadium. DePaul's record improves to 29-9 and ISU's drops to 12-27.
After a scoreless top of the first for the Redbirds, Maranda Gutierrez hit a leadoff double before being brought home on a two-run blast from Jessica Cothern. The home run was Cothern's seventh of the season to give her the second-most on the team.
The Redbirds scored their first run in the top of the third after bringing in a runner on a deep single.
In the bottom of the fourth, Alysia Rodriguez hit a leadoff home run, her second of the season, to make it a 3-1 difference.
After an Illinois State pitching change in the bottom of the fifth, DePaul quickly got two runners on base with Taylor Young being walked and Angela Scalzitti reaching on a fielder's choice. The pair would be brought home on a monstrous two-RBI double from Rodriguez that reached the fence to make the score 5-1.
With DePaul stuck at five runs, Illinois State would tally four more runs scattered throughout the next couple of innings to knot the score and enforce extra innings.
Redbird offense loaded the bases in the top of the eighth, but Natalie Halvorson would get DePaul out of the jam. The score remained 5-5 until the bottom of the ninth when Kate Polucha doubled to center field and then scored the deciding run of the game on a walk-off double from Scalzitti.
