
A Record 177 Blue Demons Named to BIG EAST All-Academic Team

BIG EAST's 2,938 All-Academic honorees most since conference realignment six years ago
CHICAGO – For the third year in a row, DePaul's Blue Demons came through with another record-breaking performance in the academic arena.
The BIG EAST All-Academic Team announced by the conference on Tuesday featured 177 student-athletes from DePaul. That tops the school record of 172 accomplished after the 2017-18 season. The 2016-17 Blue Demons had reset the standard at 170.
DePaul's 177 honorees came from the university's 15Â sports programs and was second in the BIG EAST with a remarkable 83.1 percent of Blue Demon student-athletes being named to the All-Academic Team. Seton Hall (14 teams) led with 83.7 percent. Creighton (14 teams) was third at 76 percent.
Villanova with 24 teams had the most total All-Academic selections with 342 which represented 53 percent of its student-athlete population. Georgetown (25 teams) had 74 percent selected to the All-Academic Team as did St. John's (17 teams). Butler (20 teams) had 73 percent.
The BIG EAST Conference recognized nearly 3,000 student-athletes selected to the 2018-19 BIG EAST All-Academic Team.
Nominations for the All-Academic Team are submitted by each of the BIG EAST's 10 member schools and affiliate institutions. To be eligible for the honor, a nominee must have competed in a BIG EAST-sponsored sport, attained a minimum grade-point average of 3.00 for the preceding academic year and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work totaling 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.
The nominations are reviewed and approved by the BIG EAST Academic Affairs Committee. There are 2,938 honorees for the 2018-19 academic year---the highest total in the six years since conference realignment. Affiliate student-athletes made up 179 of the honorees.
For the second-consecutive year, Villanova led all schools in total student athletes named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team with 342. Georgetown was second with 304. Butler and Seton Hall tied for third with 269 student-athletes receiving certificates.Â
In addition, the Blue Demon softball and women's tennis programs received BIG EAST Team Excellence Awards for posting their sport's highest team grade-point average in the conference. Women's tennis finished with a sparkling 3.711 GPA and softball topped out at 3.59.
