Men's Soccer Opens 2019 with Victory in Chicago Classic

CHICAGO - DePaul men's soccer secured their first victory in their regular season opener with a 2-1 statement win over Northern Illinois in the Chicago Classic at Wish Field on Friday afternoon. Freshman David Gripman netted both goals for DePaul (1-0-0), the first multiple-goal game of his career.
The freshman struck first in the 17th minute as he streamlined down the field to connect with a pass from Michael Anderson that flew just to the left of NIU keeper Christoph Koninger. Senior defender Max de Bruijne also earned an assist on the play.
Northern Illinois (0-1-0) would even the game up in the 37th minute with a goal from Louis Sala off a ball from Adrian Lara.
DePaul's determination to win showed at the beginning of the second half as Gripman would net the eventual gamewinner in the 54th minute. A ball from Brayden Callipari at the top of the box would connect with Isaac Friendt who sent it across the box to Gripman.

Vermont takes the trip west to the Windy City to kick off their regular season against Loyola Friday evening before playing on Wish Field on Sunday. The Catamounts welcome the addition of a dozen newcomers to the program. They were picked to finish fifth in the America East Preseason Coaches' Poll.

Five yellow cards were issued in the second half, four booked to the Huskies. DePaul would get outnumbered on corner kicks, 5-2, and shots overall, 11-9, but the Blue Demons had four shots on goal compared to the Huskies three.
