Blue Demons Drop Overtime Game at Villanova

DePaul erases 11-point deficit in final two minutes to force overtime
VILLANOVA, Pa. – DePaul left it all on the floor at Finneran Pavilion forcing overtime before falling to No. 14/15 Villanova, 79-75, in overtime. Charlie Moore scored 29 points including the tying basket to send the game into overtime while Paul Reed posted his 12th double-double of the season.
The first half saw both teams register impressive runs before Villanova took a 30-28 lead at halftime. DePaul used an early 17-5 to build a 21-8 advantage with just over 11 minutes left in the opening half. Nick Ongenda scored on a follow-up of his own miss forcing the Wildcats to take a time out.
Villanova answered with six straight points before DePaul scored four in-a-row capped by a lay-in for Reed for a 25-14 lead with 6:23 on the clock.
At that point, the Wildcats posted their run of the half as they finished the opening frame by outscoring the Blue Demons by a 16-3 margin. When the dust settled Saddiq Bey's basket with 33 seconds gave Villanova a two-point advantage at the break.
Villanova (13-3, 4-1 BIG EAST) tried to pull away, but the Blue Demons didn't back down. With 4:12 left in the second half, the Wildcats held a 61-49 lead following a rebound and putback by Jeremiah Robinson-Earl.
A furious final two minutes saw DePaul (12-5, 0-4 BIG EAST) score 12 of the game's final 13 points with Moore's driving lay-in tying the score at 67-67 with eight seconds left. Villanova's final attempt didn't connect sending the game to overtime.
Villanova took a quick four-point lead to begin the extra period before the Blue Demons pulled to within a point on two occasions. Moore hit two free throws with six seconds left, but Villanova held off DePaul for the 79-75 final
Moore added six assists and three steals to his game-high 29 points. Reed totaled 18 points, 15 rebounds, five steals and two blocked shots while Jaylen Butz finished with 16 points, six rebounds and two steals.
Collin Gillespie led the Wildcats with 21 points while Saddiq Bey scored 18 points.
The Blue Demons return to Wintrust Arena for three straight games starting Saturday at Noon against No. 5 Butler. Following the Butler game, Creighton visits on Jan. 22 and St. John's makes the trip to Chicago on Jan. 25.
