CHICAGO - DePaul softball came out swinging on Day One of the Samford Tournament, shutting out Georgia Tech 8-0 in five innings Friday morning in Birmingham, Ala. The Blue Demons move to 5-6 after the first game on Friday.
Junior shortstop Maranda Gutierrez got things started for the Blue Demons with a leadoff homerun to take an early one run lead over the Bulldogs. The Cailfornia native has hit two home runs so far this season.
DePaul took charge of the game in the third inning, scoring four total runs for a 5-0 lead. Senior center fielder Angela Scalzitti singled through the left side before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Gutierrez then singled to left field before senior third baseman Erin Andris's single would score Scalzitti. A passed ball would advance Andris and Gutierrez to second and third, respectively. Freshman first baseman Brooke Johnson hit her second double of the season to tally two RBI, scoring Gutierrez and Andris. Up next, senior catcher Jessica Cothern's single through the left side would score Johnson and the Blue Demons held on to their five run lead.
Sophomore DP Taylor Young started off the fourth inning with a single to right field and then stole second. Gutierrez was hit by a pitch and Young advanced to third. WIth runners on the corners, sophomore second baseman Gabby O'Riley launched her third home run of the season to score three runs for DePaul, securing the 8-0 advantage.
Senior pitcher Krista Dalgarn (3-2) picked up the win with seven total strikeouts and gave up just two hits.

- The all-time series is tied, 3-3.
- Last season, DePaul and Samford split the series with the Bulldogs taking game one, 6-0, and the Blue Demons winning the second, 5-2.
