CHICAGO - DePaul softball split their games on Day One of the Samford Tournament in Birmingham, Ala., dropping their second game to Samford in six innings, 9-1.

Junior shortstop Maranda Gutierrez started things off for the Blue Demons with a single to right field before stealing second but was left on base and Samford took a one run lead after the first. The Bulldogs would tally four more runs in a two, two RBI home run inning.

Freshman Tori Meyer started in the circle for DePaul and junior Natalie Halvorson took over in the second inning.

DePaul's lone run came in the fourth inning with a solo home run from junior left fielder Kate Polucha.

Samford increased their lead by one in the fifth inning before another home run and a two RBI single would make it a 9-1 advantage for the host team.

Abby Swaney (3-0) would take home the win for Samford while Meyer (0-1) took the loss.

NOTES

Polucha tallied her second home run of the season.
First career start for Meyer who has seven strikeouts on the season in 8.1 innings pitched.
Five different Blue Demons recorded hits off of Swaney.

UP NEXT
DePaul will look to tomorrow's match against Kentucky and the rematch against Samford. The Blue Demons play the Wildcats at 10 a.m. CT and the Bulldogs at 3 p.m. CT.

Has faced off against No. 7 Minnesota and No. 23/22 Arizona State. The Wildcats defeated Minnesota in the NFCA Lead-Off Classic, 7-0, and fell to ASU 2-3 and 5-7.

Kentucky holds a 4-3 advantage over DePaul.
The last matchup was in the 2017 NCAA Regionals where the Wildcats took the opening game 6-0.
