DePaul puts four players in double figures in 74-68 win over the Hoyas
CHICAGO - DePaul came out on top of a back and forth contest Saturday night, besting Georgetown 74-68 in a game that saw 10 lead changes. Charlie Moore led DePaul with 20 points and seven assists while Romeo Weems finished with a career-high 19 points to go with six boards.
Rounding out the Blue Demons in double figures was Jaylen Butz with 10 points and Paul Reed added a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double. As a team the Blue Demons shot .450 (27-60) from the field to go with a .400 (6-15) mark from three-point land. DePaul finished with 36 points in the paint while ending the game with only nine turnovers.
Two points from Butz opened the scoring Saturday evening as Moore found the junior big man for an easy lay in. Jalen Coleman-Lands would add the next two points, using a pump fake to free himself for a midrange jump shot, and then Reed finished a short push shot, prompting a Georgetown time out with DePaul leading 6-2 less than three minutes into the action.
With 15 minutes left on the first half clock, Reed gobbled up an offensive rebound before going back up for two points. On the next possession, DePaul forced a steal, as Moore gathered the ball in transition before finding Butz for an empathic rim shaking alley oop to give the host a 12-7 edge.
With 9:31 on the clock, a powerful Nick Ogenda put back dunk moved DePaul back into the lead as the freshman big man's finish left the backboard shaking. Two minutes later the Blue Demon run was up to 8-0 as Ongenda finished a left-handed hook shot to make it 20-15 in favor of the host.
Down the stretch of the first half, after the two teams traded the lead four times in a matter of minutes, Romeo Weems would catch fire from deep, knocking down three straight three-pointers between the 3:26 mark and the 2:12 mark to catapult the Blue Demons into the lead 33-28. However, the visitors would score the final four points of the half to go into the intermission tied at 36 all.
A two handed dunk from Weems in transition opened the second half scoring for the Blue Demons. Then, with 17:36 on the clock, Butz backed his smaller defender down, putting DePaul in front 40-36 with a short jump hook.
Less than two minutes later it was Reed leading the fast break, as the junior big man found Darious Hall in stride, who took off for the highlight reel finish, to make it 42-39 Blue Demons.
Midway through the second half, a Coleman-Lands jump shot extended the DePaul lead to four at 51-47. The Blue Demons would grow their lead to six, but the Hoyas stuck around, tying the game at 55 on an old-fashioned three-point play with 6:37 on the game clock.
Just over a minute later, Reed added another highlight, going up and under the basket for an emphatic dunk. Then, with 4:26 on the clock, Oscar Lopez Jr. led the Blue Demons in the fast break before finding Weems in the corner for a three-pointer that made it 64-57 DePaul.
Down the stretch DePaul (14-13, 2-12 BIG EAST) would get a key lay up from Butz and a crucial offensive board from Weems as the Blue Demons moved in front 68-61 with 51 seconds to play. In the closing moments, Georgetown would get as close as three, but strong free throw shooting from Reed, Moore and Weems would help the Blue Demons hold on for the win.
For Georgetown (15-12, 5-9 BIG EAST), Terrell Allen led the Hoyas with 21 points while Jamorko Pickett finished with 19.
DePaul returns to action on Tuesday as the Blue Demons travel to Xavier for a 7 p.m. ET tip. Television coverage can be found on the CBS Sports Network while the game can be heard on the radio on WYLL (1160 AM).
