DePaul Drops First Game of Saluki Invitational

CHICAGO - DePaul softball fell to Western Illinois in game one of the Saluki Invitational on Friday morning, 6-2, as a five run second inning for the Leathernecks proved to be too much for the Blue Demons to overcome.Â
Freshman pitcher Brooke Johnson started her fourth game of her career. While Western Illinois scored those five runs in the second, the third inning saw both teams score one run apiece. Junior shortstop Maranda Gutierrez hit her third home run of the season to get DePaul on the board, 5-1 after the top of the third. Junior Natalie Halvorson stepped into the circle late in the second inning and the Leathernecks would tack on another run in the bottom of the third to give themselves a five-run lead over DePaul.Â
In the top of the sixth, senior third baseman Erin Andris launched her fifth homerun of the season to cut the deficit to four but the Blue Demons wouldn't get across the plate. Johnson would take the loss (1-2) for DePaul.Â
