Four players score in double figures to lead Blue Demons over Dukes
CHICAGO – Behind a second-half eruption and four Blue Demons in double figures, DePaul closed out its season-opening homestand with an 87-67 win over Duquesne on Tuesday night at Wintrust Arena.
Javon Freeman-Liberty led DePaul (7-1) with a game-high 26 points to go along with nine rebounds and five assists in 35 minutes of action.
Nick Ongenda and Brandon Johnson netted 13 points apiece, while the pair of big men grabbed six and four rebounds, respectively. Philmon Gebrewhit rounded out the Blue Demons in double figures with 11 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Johnson scored the game's first five points as the Blue Demons jumped out to an early 5-0 lead.
Out of the under-12 media timeout, David Jones netted a second-chance layup before the Dukes rattled off an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to take an 18-14 advantage.
A Jalen Terry transition dunk followed by a Gebrewhit triple put the Blue Demons on top 25-23 with 3:46 remaining in the first frame. A trio of triples from Courvoisier McCauley, Terry and Freeman-Liberty in the final two and a half minutes gave DePaul its largest lead of the half heading into the locker room in front, 36-30.
Yor Anei battled on the glass in the opening stanza with eight rebounds including five offensive boards.
Freeman-Liberty and Ongenda combined for 12 points in the first five-and-a-half minutes of the second half as the Blue Demons converted on seven of its first 10 field goal attempts to take a 52-44 lead.
The Blue Demons ran off a 16-2 run while holding the Dukes without a field goal for nearly three minutes to extend its advantage to 73-54 with 5:28 left to play.
DePaul shot .636 from the field in the second half and netted a season-high 10 triples on the outing.
Duquesne (3-7) was led by 17 points from Tre Williams.
