David Jones leads the way with 33 points and 14 rebounds for the Blue Demons
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – David Jones led the way with a 33-point, 14-rebound double-double as DePaul went on the road and collected a 62-55 win at Louisville. Nick Ongenda blocked a career-high eight shots and to go along with eight points and nine rebounds for the Blue Demons.
Playing outside of Wintrust Arena for the first time this season, the Blue Demons started slow offensively, but stingy defense and aggressive rebounding kept DePaul in the game.
Trailing 15-6, DePaul reeled off 10 straight points while holding Louisville scoreless for over six minutes. A corner three-pointer by Brandon Johnson gave the Blue Demons the lead at 16-15 at the six-minute mark.
Overall, DePaul (8-1) outscored Louisville 20-2 with Jalen Terry's three-pointer with 4:06 on clock pushing DePaul's advantage to 26-17.
Louisville (6-3) answered and scored the final 12 points of the first half that ended with a three-pointer by Matt Cross with four second left to give the Cardinals a 29-26 lead at intermission.
The Cardinals held the advantage over the first 11 minutes of the second half before Jones drilled a three at top of key that gave DePaul a 46-44 lead. Jones scored 23 points in the second half alone that included seven straight points and pushed the Blue Demons ahead 56-50 with 3:55 on the clock.
Louisville made a late charge and pulled to within three but Jones hit a pull-up jumper and Javon Freeman-Liberty knocked down two free throws to seal the victory.
Freeman-Liberty finished with eight points, six rebounds and four steals. The Cardinals were led by 22 points by Malik Williams.
DePaul continues the three-game road trip on Tuesday with a short drive to UIC. Start time between the Blue Demons and Flames is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Credit Union One Pavilion.
