Western Michigan’s five-run sixth inning too much for the Blue Demons

ROSEMONT, Ill. – In its second game of the day, DePaul dropped a 9-3 contest at the hands of Western Michigan on Friday evening.

A Sydney Stefanik three-run homer to left field gave the Broncos an early 3-0 lead in the first inning and the Blue Demons could never recover. Western Michigan tacked on a another home run in the second off the bat of Mackenzie Swinehart to make it a 4-0 ballgame.

DePaul (1-1) loaded the bases in the second and had opportunities to put some runs across the plate, but couldn't convert until a Tori Meyer sacrifice fly in the third inning put the Blue Demons on the board by way of a Zoie Rettig run.

Skylor Hilger reached base at the leadoff spot in the fourth inning to give DePaul a spark. Angela Scalzitti drove her home off of a dead-ball double to narrow the deficit to 4-2.

The Blue Demons loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth inning and scored one run on a Broncos wild pitch to close the margin to 4-3.

Western Michigan (1-0) tacked on five more runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach for DePaul.

Tracie Adix-Zins and Co. return to the Dome at Rosemont for two games on Saturday. First pitch against the Roos of Kansas City is set for 9 a.m. while a meeting with Loyola is set for 2 p.m.
